If this is where you are headed from Malpensa, roughly 50 km to the northwest, then you are not merely transferring between an airport and a rail hub. You are trading a runway for a skyline. The good news is that the trip is short, the options are few, and each one deposits you within sight of those towers.

The train that already knows your address

The obvious hero here is the Malpensa Express, run by Trenord, and its appeal is almost embarrassingly neat. The Centrale-bound service, which departs from the platform tucked beneath Terminal 1, stops at Milano Porta Garibaldi on its way into the city, at the surface-level platforms, so you do not need to ride all the way to Centrale and double back. No change of trains, no fussing with a connection while dragging a suitcase across an unfamiliar concourse. The journey runs about 43 minutes, and the fare is a flat €15, which is one of those rare prices that means the same thing whether you are one person or simply the only person keeping track of the receipts. Trains roll roughly every 30 minutes across a long day, broadly from around 05:00 until about 23:30, so unless your flight lands truly deep into the night, there is almost always one waiting. For anyone whose hotel sits in the Porta Nuova or Isola district, this is close to perfect, because Garibaldi also plugs straight into metro lines M2 and M5 if you need to hop a stop or two further. My honest bias: for a solo traveller or a couple travelling light, nothing else really competes with it.

When you would rather not touch a platform at all

There are, of course, arrivals that make a train feel like a punishment. Three heavy bags. A red-eye that lands you bleary and disoriented. The door-to-door option, and why a big station rewards it

A private transfer collapses that gap entirely, carrying you and your bags straight to the lobby. For families, for anyone with mobility concerns, or for a group where the price splits nicely, it can be the quietly sensible choice rather than the extravagant one. If you are travelling light and roughly awake, take the Malpensa Express, because a direct €15 ride that sets you down beneath the towers is hard to argue with. If there are three or four of you, or your flight lands late and your patience has left the building, the flat-fare taxi at around €104 to €110 turns four people into a bargain and one tired person into a treat. And if the thought of hauling bags across that vast station makes you wince, book the private transfer and let a driver carry the day.
