You board at the coach bays outside Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 arrivals, and it carries you without a single change to Como's Piazzale San Gottardo — a gateway square from which the old town and the promenade are an easy stroll. The ride lands somewhere around 55 to 60 minutes when the roads are kind. Fares run around €12 to €25, and where you fall in that band depends almost entirely on how far in advance you commit; the earlier you book, the closer to the lower figure you tend to land. This is the option for the solo wanderer or the couple travelling light, watching the towns thin out through the window. One caveat worth taking seriously: departures are limited, running roughly every four hours across the day, so this is not a turn-up-and-go affair. Reserve your seat before you fly, and check the specific departure time against your landing.

The regional train, and the small ritual of Saronno

For those who like their travel stitched together by rail, Trenord's regional service offers a quieter, thriftier passage — though it asks a little patience of you. There is no direct train from the airport to Como, so the journey involves a single change. You leave from the regional platforms at the Malpensa Aeroporto T1 station, ride down to Saronno, and there swap trains for the final leg. All told the trip runs around an hour and twenty minutes, transfer included, and the combined fare comes to roughly €10 — the gentlest price on the page. The reward at the far end is geography: the regional line delivers you to Como Lago, the lakeside station, which sets you down within sight of the water rather than up the hill. Trains run about hourly, so the timetable is forgiving, but do allow margin at Saronno so a tight connection doesn't fray your nerves. With a couple of suitcases the change means hauling bags across a platform; pack with that in mind, and the ritual becomes part of the pleasure rather than a chore.

The private car, for the villages the bus forgets

The lake does not end at Como, and neither, sometimes, should your ride. A private door-to-door transfer, booked ahead through Welcome Pickups or a local firm, has you walk straight from the arrivals hall to a waiting car, no bus bay to find, and drives you straight to your Como hotel, or onward to the quieter shores the scheduled coach never touches. Allow something in the range of €120 to €170 for a fixed, agreed price, with a run time near 55 minutes since the driver takes the most direct road. That is plainly the dearest choice for one or two people. But the arithmetic shifts with company: split three or four ways among a family or a group of friends heading to the same villa, the per-head cost softens considerably, and you buy flexibility that no timetable can match. This is the way to reach a lakeside hamlet with an awkward address, to arrive late without fear of missing the last departure, or simply to let someone else carry the bags while you watch the hills rise.

Choosing your passage

So weigh it by temperament as much as by price. Travelling alone or as a pair with modest luggage, book the Flibco coach early and let it drop you at Piazzale San Gottardo for very little — provided its four-hourly rhythm fits your landing. Counting every euro, or charmed by the idea of stepping off at the water's edge at Como Lago, take the Trenord regional and make peace with the change at Saronno. And if you are a group, weighed down with cases, arriving after dark, or bound for a village the bus skips entirely, the private transfer pays off. My own quiet pick for most lake-bound arrivals is the direct shuttle, booked well ahead, but the lake, generous as ever, rewards whichever way you come to it.
