London Heathrow is the UK's largest airport and the busiest in Europe, about 24 km west of the centre across four terminals. It has more ways into town than almost any airport in the world: the 15-minute Heathrow Express to Paddington, the cheaper Elizabeth line across the city, the budget Piccadilly line Underground, National Express coaches, metered black cabs and pre-booked minicabs. Step-free access in London
The rail routes out of Heathrow are among the easier airport journeys in Europe for anyone using a wheelchair, travelling with a pushchair or simply hauling a heavy case.
- Elizabeth line — step-free from street to train at all the Heathrow stations, with level boarding: no gap and no step between platform and carriage. Wheelchair spaces are in carriage 5, which stops near the middle of the platform; look for the blue wheelchair signs on the wall and floor.
- Paddington is step-free, and gained an additional step-free entrance in 2024.
- Heathrow Express — staff are on hand to assist at every station it serves, from 05:00 to midnight. Outside those hours arrange help in advance rather than relying on finding someone.
- Black cabs are wheelchair accessible by law and carry ramps, so the taxi rank is a genuine option rather than a fallback.
If you need boarding assistance, book it with the operator before you travel; turning up at the platform and asking is slower and not always possible late at night.
