Suvarnabhumi Airport ground transport

Suvarnabhumi is Bangkok's main international gateway and one of the busiest in Southeast Asia, about 25 km east of the centre. The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai (interchange with the BTS Skytrain) and Makkasan (near the MRT) for around €1, metered taxis are cheap by global standards (meter plus a 50-baht airport surcharge and expressway tolls), and direct coaches reach beach-bound Pattaya. Prices here are converted to euros at about 39 THB to the euro. This guide compares price, time and frequency for every popular destination.

Getting around

Step-free access in Bangkok

The Airport Rail Link works well for most passengers, but there are two specific traps at the city end that are worth knowing before you set off.

  • All ARL stations have lifts and the trains offer near-level boarding, so the airport end is straightforward.
  • Power wheelchair users should not use the Phaya Thai terminus. The gap between platform and train there is wide enough to trap or damage a powered chair. Manual wheelchairs can clear it with help from station staff.
  • Do not plan a BTS-to-ARL transfer at Phaya Thai — there is no lift from the BTS platform down to the mezzanine, so the interchange is not step-free in either direction.
  • The one fully accessible interchange is MRT Phetchaburi to ARL Makkasan. The MRT subway has lifts at every station; the BTS Skytrain does not.

If you use a powered chair, routing via Makkasan and the MRT is the dependable plan, and a pre-booked accessible taxi is the fallback.
