Some destinations you reach almost by accident; Bergamo you have to mean to visit. It sits roughly 95 km east of Malpensa, on the far side of the Milanese plain, and the airport that logically serves it is not the one you have just landed at. It is Orio al Serio (BGY), tucked under the city's own hill. Arriving instead at Malpensa means committing to a proper cross-region haul, close to an hour and a half of motorway before the Città Alta finally rises into view: that beautifully preserved walled upper town floating above the busy, workaday lower town where most trains and buses actually deposit you. It is a journey worth planning rather than improvising, because the truth is that Malpensa and Bergamo were never designed to talk to one another.

The one coach that understands the geography

The mode to reach for first is the direct airport-to-city coach, run under the Orio Shuttle and FlixBus names. It is the only option that treats this trip as a single journey rather than a puzzle to be reassembled in Milan. You board at the coach bays and platform beside the rail station at Malpensa — served from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and stay in your seat for around an hour and twenty-five minutes as the bus threads between the two airports and the Bergamo city stops. The fare sits somewhere around €11 to €16, which for a hundred-kilometre ride is frankly generous. The snag, and it is a real one, is frequency: departures are limited to several a day rather than every half hour, so this is not a turn-up-and-go service. Look at the timetable before you fly, and book the specific departure that matches your landing, with a sensible cushion for the passport queue. Miss it, and you may be waiting a good while for the next.

When the rails make you go through Milan first

If your flight lands at an awkward hour that no coach flatters, the train becomes the dependable fallback — though it takes the scenic bureaucratic route. There is no direct rail line from the airport to Bergamo; instead you ride the Malpensa Express (Trenord) from the platforms beneath Terminal 1 into Milano Centrale, then change onto a regional Trenord service out to Bergamo. Plan for around two hours all told once the connection is counted, roughly €15 for the Malpensa Express plus about €6 for the Milan–Bergamo leg, so call it near €20. It is slower than the coach and asks you to haul your bags across the marble expanse of Centrale, but its saving grace is abundance: these trains run frequently in both stages, so a missed connection is merely an inconvenience rather than a stranding. For a solo traveller travelling light and unbothered by a change, it is a perfectly civilised way to arrive.

Door to door, for a price, when the timetable simply won't bend

Then there are the flights that land near midnight, or the parties of four laden with cases who have no appetite for a bus bay at all. For them the private door-to-door transfer earns its keep. Firms such as Welcome Pickups and local operators have you walk straight from the Arrivals hall to a waiting car: no bus bay, no ticket queue, and drive you straight to your hotel — up into the Città Alta's lanes if the streets allow, or to a lower-town address if they don't — in around 75 minutes with no changes and no waiting for a scheduled departure. It is comfortably the priciest choice, roughly €150 to €210 for the long cross-region run, and quoted as a fixed price with flight tracking so a delayed arrival does not cost you the ride. Split three or four ways it stops looking extravagant; for a lone traveller it is a luxury, but on a late flight when the coaches have stopped running, sometimes it is the only key that fits the lock.

So which one gets my vote

Weigh it as I do and the pattern is clear. If a coach departure lines up with your flight, the direct Orio Shuttle or FlixBus is the sensible pick every time — cheapest, simplest, and it actually respects how far apart these two places are. When the timetable refuses to cooperate, or you are alone and easy about a change at Centrale, the train's sheer frequency wins out at a modest premium. Save the private transfer for late arrivals, heavy luggage, or a group splitting the fare, where the door-to-door comfort justifies the cost. Prices and schedules do drift, so treat every figure here as a guide and confirm before you travel, but do make the effort. Those Venetian walls waiting at the top of the funicular are worth the long ride across Lombardy.
