The first thing to understand about Kos is that the airport is nowhere near the town. Hippocrates airport sits at Antimachia in the island's waist, which means the transfer question depends entirely on which direction you're heading. Kardamena is about six kilometres south, Mastichari five to the north, and Kefalos twelve to the west — all of them a few minutes in a car. Kos Town, where the castle, the harbour and the Roman remains are, sits twenty-six kilometres away at the north-eastern tip, and that's the run most arrivals make. KTEL Kos operates the island network with a bus into Kos Town for around €4 and short hops to Mastichari for about €2.50. The catch is frequency: the airport isn't a hub, and services on some routes run only every few hours, timed loosely against the flight schedule rather than a clock-face timetable. Taxis wait outside arrivals and are inconsistent about how they charge — some run the meter, some quote a fixed price, and the two can differ by ten euros on the same journey, so establish which before you set off. The bigger thing to watch is the night surcharge: between roughly midnight and five in the morning it applies in full, and a Kos Town fare that costs €38 in daylight can reach €55–65. Given how many charters into Kos land in the small hours, that is not a hypothetical. Pre-booked transfers price against those numbers and hold whatever the hour. Car hire is popular and genuinely useful, because the island is long, thin and worth driving end to end.
