Lesvos is much larger than most people expect — the third-biggest Greek island, 1,600 square kilometres of olive terraces, pine ridges and two enormous gulfs that bite so deep the island is nearly cut in two. That geography, not the airport, is what shapes getting around. Mytilene and the airport sit in the south-east corner; Molyvos and Petra are on the north coast an hour and a quarter away, Plomari is an hour south over the mountain, and Skala Eresou at the western end is closer to two hours. KTEL Lesvou runs the buses and the network is built for islanders rather than arrivals: the airport service covers the seven kilometres into Mytilene for about €2.10 and stops around half past nine at night, and every other destination requires changing at the KTEL station in town onto a village coach that may run twice a day. That is why almost everyone heading beyond Mytilene books a transfer or hires a car — verified prices sit around €65 to Molyvos or Petra and about €99 to Plomari, per vehicle. Taxis are cheap for the short hop into town, around €15. One thing worth knowing if you are coming from Turkey rather than Athens: the Ayvalık–Mytilene ferry crosses in about ninety minutes and lands you in the harbour rather than at the airport, which changes the arithmetic entirely for anyone travelling from the Turkish coast.
