Buying tickets in Mytilene
Lesvos is Greece's third-largest island and its bus network is built for residents rather than arrivals. KTEL Lesvou runs the airport service into Mytilene for about โฌ2.10, taking around 25 minutes, with the last departure near 21:30 โ evening flights from Athens routinely land after it. Everywhere else means changing at the KTEL station in Mytilene onto a village coach that may run only once or twice a day: Molyvos and Petra in the north, Plomari over the mountain to the south, Skala Eresou two hours west. Tickets are bought at the station or from the driver in cash. Because of this, most visitors beyond the capital either pre-book a transfer or hire a car โ and the island's rental fleet is small enough that August sells out, so reserve before you fly.

Total around ten euros and close to three hours with the wait. If you arrive on a morning flight and the connection works, it is a pleasant journey through olive country. If you arrive at seven in the evening, there is no onward coach at all.

Above the harbour, most of it is pedestrian โ steps, arches and passages too narrow for any vehicle. Whatever you arrive in stops at the edge of the old village or down at the harbour car park, and the last stretch is on foot. Small hotels here are used to this: several will send someone with a trolley if you tell them your arrival time, and the luggage carts that work the lanes are part of the local scenery.
Eftalou's hot springs are ten minutes on
Just east of Molyvos, past the last houses, a small domed bathhouse sits on the shore where thermal water comes out of the rock at about forty degrees. You pay a couple of euros and sit in a stone chamber that has been in use since Ottoman times, then swim in the sea to cool down. It is one of the better things on Lesvos and it is a short drive or a forty-minute coastal walk from the village.
A castle, a harbour and no beach to speak of
Set expectations. Molyvos is a beautiful village rather than a beach resort โ the shingle beach below the castle is small and stony, and most people who want proper sand drive to Petra five kilometres south or to the beaches further round the coast. What Molyvos has is the harbour tavernas, the lanes, the castle with its summer concerts, and a sunset over the water towards Turkey that is worth the seventy-five-minute transfer on its own.
A car changes a week here completely
At โฌ25 to โฌ45 a day, and this is the part of Lesvos where it matters most. From Molyvos you are an hour and a quarter from the airport, forty minutes from Kalloni's gulf, and beyond walking distance of everything except Eftalou and Petra. The coach network up here amounts to a couple of services a day. Nearly everyone staying in the north for a week hires โ and given the island's small fleet, that means reserving before you fly rather than on arrival.
Book the return leg with the outbound
Departures from Mytilene tend to be early morning, and there is no coach from the north coast that gets you there in time.
