Innsbruck handled 882,876 passengers in 2025, which makes it small by European standards and misleading as a number, because the traffic is concentrated: scheduled routes run year-round but the winter season brings charter flights that fill the terminal on Saturdays with skiers from Britain, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Most of them are not staying in Innsbruck at all. The airport lies about five kilometres west of the old town — close enough that the approach flies over the city and between the mountains, which is the landing everyone remembers. Getting into town is simple: IVB bus line F runs every fifteen minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, every thirty on Sundays and public holidays, and a single Kernzone ticket costs €3.20. It reaches the Hauptbahnhof in fifteen to eighteen minutes, though the station is halfway along the route rather than the terminus, and the most central stop is Anichstraße/Rathausgalerien a couple of minutes further on. For the resorts, the Hauptbahnhof is the hinge. The Arlberg line runs west to St. Anton without a change; the Giselabahn heads east through Jenbach and Wörgl to Kitzbühel; at Jenbach the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn turns south to Mayrhofen every half hour; the S6 climbs north to Seefeld and on to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Ischgl means a train to Landeck-Zams and then a bus, and the Ötztal resorts of Sölden and Obergurgl mean either Ötztal Bahnhof and a bus, or a direct coach from the station. Against all of that, most skiers simply book a shared transfer at the airport door, from about €27 a head, because it carries the skis and goes to the chalet.
