Buying tickets in Barcelona
Barcelona's public network runs on integrated ATM tickets sold at red TMB machines in the terminals. The airport metro (L9 Sud) is not covered by the standard T-casual multi-trip ticket, which excludes airport stations, so you buy a separate single Airport Metro ticket (around €5.50 one-way). If you plan several rides, the Hola BCN travel card (2-5 days) does include unlimited airport metro and city transport. The Aerobús to Plaça Catalunya is a separate flat fare of about €7.25 one-way. Machines take cash and contactless.
Taxi scams & safety in Barcelona
Use only the official black-and-yellow taxi rank outside each terminal; drivers are metered under the metropolitan tariff, so central Barcelona typically runs roughly €30-40 including the airport supplement. The widely repeated "fixed €39" applies only to the cruise-port (Moll Adossat) route, not the city. Ignore anyone approaching you inside arrivals offering a ride. Uber, Bolt, Cabify and Free Now all operate here; request the car and meet it at the signed ride-hail pickup area rather than the taxi rank.
Step-free access in Barcelona
Barcelona is one of the better European airports for step-free arrival, largely because the metro line built to serve it was designed for it.
- Metro L9 Sud serves both T1 and T2 and every one of its stations has lifts, with carriage doors flush to the platform — no gap and no step. It is the most reliable step-free route out of the airport.
- Aerobús carries wheelchairs, pushchairs and oversized luggage, with a dedicated space on board.
- R2 Nord train runs from the Aeroport station to Barcelona-Sants and the centre; note that it serves Terminal 2, so from T1 you first need the free shuttle bus between terminals.
Nearly all metro stations and buses in the city are wheelchair accessible, so onward connections are rarely the obstacle.
