Geneva Airport lies right against the Franco-Swiss frontier, ~4 km northwest of the city. Under the terminal is a full SBB/CFF station: trains reach Geneva Cornavin in about 7 minutes for a CHF 3 (~€3) Unireso Zone-10 ticket, running up to seven times an hour. Before you leave the baggage hall, note the free-ticket machine — and in any case your baggage-claim tag works as a free 80-minute Zone-10 pass on trains, TPG buses, trams and the yellow lake shuttles. From Cornavin, direct SBB trains continue along Lake Geneva to Lausanne (~49 min) and Montreux (~1h15). The bigger story at GVA is the winter transfer trade into the mountains: shared shuttle firms such as AlpyBus, Mountain Drop Offs, Alpine Fleet and Alps2Alps run door-to-valley services to Chamonix, Morzine, Verbier and the Tarentaise resorts, alongside bookable private minibuses. Metered Swiss taxis are quick into town (CHF 35-45) but steep for cross-border resort runs, where a pre-agreed fixed fare matters. Car rental desks sit in the arrivals concourse. Step-free access in Geneva
The railway station is built into the terminal, one level below arrivals, so the first stage is easy — the variable is boarding the train itself.
- Genève-Aéroport station is reached by lift from the arrivals level, a covered indoor walk of about five to seven minutes from baggage reclaim.
- SBB/CFF and Léman Express run assistance services for passengers with reduced mobility, but at the airport station wheelchair users should book boarding and alighting help in advance rather than expecting it on the platform.
- Genève-Cornavin, the main station and the interchange for onward trains, has a step-free route between the platforms and the exits via ramps, escalators and lifts.
For journeys into France or up to the ski resorts, a pre-booked road transfer avoids the boarding question altogether and is often the simpler answer with a wheelchair and winter luggage.
