Velana International Airport ground transportation
Unlike most airports, MLE has almost no roads leading out of it — it stands on the reclaimed island of Hulhulé, and only Malé and neighbouring Hulhumalé connect to it overland via the Sinamalé Bridge. For those two the choice is a taxi across the bridge (5–15 min, government fixed fares of MVR 70 to Malé and MVR 80–85 to Hulhumalé, about USD 5–6, cash), an RTL public bus (MVR 10–15, under USD 1) or, to Malé, the round-the-clock MTCC airport ferry (~10 min, MVR 15 or USD 1). Everything beyond is on the water. The local islands popular with independent travellers — Maafushi, Gulhi, Guraidhoo, Thulusdhoo — are served by cheap, slow MTCC public ferries that sail from Malé (not the airport) on most days except Fridays, and by faster shared speedboats (~30–60 min, from about USD 25 per person) that pre-book online and often collect you straight from the airport jetty. Resort guests are met by their resort's own staff and moved either by private speedboat (for nearby islands) or by seaplane from the dedicated seaplane terminal next to arrivals; seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late landing usually means an overnight in Malé or Hulhumalé. Malé City is 3 km from MLE, about 10 min at the quickest. The capital is the airport's nearest neighbour: a 10-minute MTCC ferry across the harbour for about €1, or a quick taxi over the Sinamalé Bridge.

Buying tickets in Malé
The Maldives has no city metro or tram from Velana (MLE): almost everyone is met by their resort. At the arrivals hall, resort and hotel desks (the numbered counters, roughly Stations 1-90) arrange your onward transfer, whether a shared speedboat, a Trans Maldivian/Manta seaplane, or a domestic connecting flight. If you are staying in the capital, the public airport ferry to Malé island runs 24 hours a day, every 15 minutes by day and every 30 minutes at night, for MVR 15 or USD 1, bought at the stall near the terminal exit. Speedboat and seaplane transfers are pre-arranged and priced by your resort.
Taxi scams & safety in Malé
Go straight to your resort's desk at arrivals, where a representative usually holds a sign with your name; do not follow anyone offering an unsolicited boat or "cheaper" transfer. The public ferry and speedboat jetties are just across from the terminal, so no long taxi is needed. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so if your international flight lands late afternoon you may overnight in Malé and fly onward next morning; a late arrival is normal, not a scam. Confirm all transfer costs with your resort before travelling.
