Buying tickets in Malé
The Maldives has no city metro or tram from Velana (MLE): almost everyone is met by their resort. At the arrivals hall, resort and hotel desks (the numbered counters, roughly Stations 1-90) arrange your onward transfer, whether a shared speedboat, a Trans Maldivian/Manta seaplane, or a domestic connecting flight. If you are staying in the capital, the public airport ferry to Malé island runs 24 hours a day, every 15 minutes by day and every 30 minutes at night, for MVR 15 or USD 1, bought at the stall near the terminal exit. Speedboat and seaplane transfers are pre-arranged and priced by your resort.
Taxi scams & safety in Malé
Go straight to your resort's desk at arrivals, where a representative usually holds a sign with your name; do not follow anyone offering an unsolicited boat or "cheaper" transfer. The public ferry and speedboat jetties are just across from the terminal, so no long taxi is needed. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so if your international flight lands late afternoon you may overnight in Malé and fly onward next morning; a late arrival is normal, not a scam. Confirm all transfer costs with your resort before travelling.

Getting from MLE to Malé City
You have one night in the capital before the resort speedboat or the local-island ferry leaves in the morning, and the first thing to understand about getting from Velana International to Malé City is that the airport is not in Malé at all. It sits on Hulhulé, its own reclaimed island, a strip of runway and terminal separated from the capital by a channel of harbour water. For years that meant everyone reached the city by boat. Then the Sinamalé Bridge (the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge) opened, and the arithmetic quietly changed: you can now drive straight off the airport island and be in central Malé in about ten minutes without touching a boat. The old harbour ferry still runs, still costs almost nothing, and plenty of travellers still take it. So the real question on this three-kilometre hop is a small one with a surprising amount behind it: do you cross by bridge, or across the water?
You can drive off the airport island now — the Sinamalé Bridge in practice
Before the bridge, the only way into Malé was the harbour crossing. Today a two-lane road runs from Hulhulé over the water and lands you in the middle of the capital. A metered taxi from the rank directly outside arrivals takes this route and reaches most addresses in around ten minutes, charging somewhere between MVR 80 and 160, roughly €5 to €10, depending on which corner of the island you are headed to and what time it is. That is the whole appeal: the taxi is the one option that puts you and your bags at an actual door rather than at a pier or a bus stop, no walk at the far end. If you are arriving with a suitcase, a tired travel companion, and a guesthouse address written down, the bridge taxi is usually the least-fuss choice, and the fare is small enough that splitting it makes it almost trivial.
The MTCC harbour ferry: MVR 15 and a two-minute walk from arrivals
The ferry has not gone anywhere, and for a solo traveller it is hard to beat. The MTCC airport ferry jetty is a two-minute walk to the left of the arrivals exit — you buy a paper ticket at the counter before you board, MVR 15, which drivers will happily take as one US dollar. Boats leave roughly every fifteen minutes from about 05:00 until around midnight, and the crossing itself takes about ten minutes across the harbour. It lands at the MTCC terminal on Malé's northeast shore, close to the fish market and the waterfront, so if your guesthouse is in that part of the island you may barely need a taxi at all afterward. Three bags travel free; anything beyond that needs a luggage ticket. The downside is the same one every ferry has: it drops everyone at one pier, so if your bed is on the far side of the island you will either walk it or grab a short cab from the terminal.
The public bus: cheapest of the lot, but it keeps its own timetable

It runs frequently through the day and it is useful in one specific situation: the ferry has just pulled away, you are travelling light, and you would rather not wait fifteen minutes on the jetty. It takes a little longer than the ferry, maybe fifteen minutes plus the stops, and like the ferry it leaves you at a set point rather than your door. Fine with a backpack. Less fun with a hard-shell case and a stroller.
When a midnight landing tips the scales toward a booked pickup
Flights into Velana have a habit of touching down at unsociable hours, and that is exactly when a pre-arranged pickup earns its keep. Most Malé guesthouses will arrange a hotel car for your flight if you ask: their driver waits in the arrivals hall, walks you to a private car, and takes the bridge into the city while you skip the ticket counter entirely. Expect to pay a set fee of around €15 to €30 — more than the taxi rank, but you know the number in advance and there is no negotiating at 1 a.m. When the ferry has thinned out and the bus has stopped for the night. If your flight lands after the harbour ferry winds down, this is the option that removes every decision from your plate.
