Buying tickets in Malé
The Maldives has no city metro or tram from Velana (MLE): almost everyone is met by their resort. At the arrivals hall, resort and hotel desks (the numbered counters, roughly Stations 1-90) arrange your onward transfer, whether a shared speedboat, a Trans Maldivian/Manta seaplane, or a domestic connecting flight. If you are staying in the capital, the public airport ferry to Malé island runs 24 hours a day, every 15 minutes by day and every 30 minutes at night, for MVR 15 or USD 1, bought at the stall near the terminal exit. Speedboat and seaplane transfers are pre-arranged and priced by your resort.
Taxi scams & safety in Malé
Go straight to your resort's desk at arrivals, where a representative usually holds a sign with your name; do not follow anyone offering an unsolicited boat or "cheaper" transfer. The public ferry and speedboat jetties are just across from the terminal, so no long taxi is needed. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so if your international flight lands late afternoon you may overnight in Malé and fly onward next morning; a late arrival is normal, not a scam. Getting from MLE to Hulhumalé
Of everywhere you can go from Velana International, Hulhumalé is the one place you reach without stepping onto a boat. It sits on the same island chain as the runway, reclaimed land joined to the airport by a short road causeway, so the whole trip is a drive of about six kilometres that takes ten to fifteen minutes. That single fact reshapes the plan: no ferry ticket, no jetty queue, no waiting for a scheduled crossing. For anyone booked into a Hulhumalé guesthouse, chasing the long public swimming beach, or lining up a cheap dinner before an early departure, this is the shortest hop on the whole atoll map. It is also why so many travellers deliberately sleep here the night before a dawn flight or a first-light seaplane transfer. You can roll out of bed and be at check-in inside twenty minutes.
Grabbing a cab at the rank and being driven to a numbered street
The taxi is the path of least resistance, and it is cheap by any standard. Walk out to the arrivals-side taxi rank, take the first cab, and the driver stays on Hulhulé before crossing the link road onto Hulhumalé: no water involved at any point. The government fixed fare is MVR 80 to Hulhumalé Phase 1 and MVR 85 to Phase 2, about USD 5.20 to 5.50, paid in cash, for a ride of about twelve minutes. Quote the official fare if a driver asks for more. What you are really paying for is the door. Hulhumalé's hotels are scattered along numbered streets that mean nothing to a first-time visitor, and dragging a suitcase from a bus stop while squinting at street signs is a poor way to start a stay. The MVR 10–15 bus the layover crowd rides

Board at the stop outside the terminal: route R4 serves the southern Phase 1 every 30 minutes until about 00:20, and route R9 serves the northern Phase 2 every 30 minutes around the clock. The fare is MVR 10 on the R4 and MVR 15 on the R9, under a US dollar, paid with exact cash, a contactless card or the RTL app, and the ride takes 20 to 25 minutes with a few stops along the way. Buses pause for Friday midday prayers. It is the cheapest link between the airport and the island, full stop. The trade-off is the one you would expect: you carry your own bags from the stop to wherever you are staying, which is fine with a backpack and less fun with two wheeled cases.
