Buying tickets in Malé
The Maldives has no city metro or tram from Velana (MLE): almost everyone is met by their resort. At the arrivals hall, resort and hotel desks (the numbered counters, roughly Stations 1-90) arrange your onward transfer, whether a shared speedboat, a Trans Maldivian/Manta seaplane, or a domestic connecting flight. If you are staying in the capital, the public airport ferry to Malé island runs 24 hours a day, every 15 minutes by day and every 30 minutes at night, for MVR 15 or USD 1, bought at the stall near the terminal exit. Speedboat and seaplane transfers are pre-arranged and priced by your resort.
Taxi scams & safety in Malé
Go straight to your resort's desk at arrivals, where a representative usually holds a sign with your name; do not follow anyone offering an unsolicited boat or "cheaper" transfer. The public ferry and speedboat jetties are just across from the terminal, so no long taxi is needed. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so if your international flight lands late afternoon you may overnight in Malé and fly onward next morning; a late arrival is normal, not a scam. Confirm all transfer costs with your resort before travelling.

Getting from MLE to Maafushi
Somewhere over the last decade word got out: you can visit the Maldives without booking a resort villa on stilts. Maafushi is where that idea took shape. It is a local island in South Malé Atoll, about 27 km south of the airport, packed with guesthouses, dive shops, a bikini beach and cheap sandbank trips, and it costs a fraction of what the overwater brochures quote. The drawback is purely logistical. Maafushi has no runway and no bridge to anywhere. Every route from Velana International Airport to your guesthouse door ends on the deck of a boat, and which boat you catch depends almost entirely on what time your plane touches down and what day of the week it is.
Why the day of the week decides your first move
There are two scheduled ways south, and they are not interchangeable. The MTCC public ferry is the cheap one: roughly MVR 22, about USD 1.50, for the crossing. But it is slow at about 1 hour 45 minutes, it sails from Malé at 15:00 (with an extra 10:00 sailing on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays), and, the part that catches people out, it does not run on Fridays or public holidays. It also can't be booked online. You pay in cash at the Villingili Ferry Terminal in Malé. So even reaching the ferry is a small project: you first ride the airport ferry across to the capital (MVR 15 or USD 1), then cross the city to the ferry terminal on its west side. Land on a Friday, or arrive in the afternoon after the day's single sailing has already left, and the public ferry simply isn't an option until tomorrow.
The speedboat that sails when the ferry won't
This is exactly why most guesthouse guests skip the public ferry and take a shared speedboat instead. Guesthouse and tour operators run scheduled boats that cover the same water in 30 to 45 minutes, and the headline reason to choose one is timing: they run daily, Fridays included, several times a day, so they fill every gap the public ferry leaves open. Expect around USD 25 each way, a little more with some operators. You reserve online a day or two ahead, which is worth doing because seats sell out in high season. Where the boat leaves from depends on the operator, so confirm the meeting point when you book; most meet you in the arrivals hall and walk you to the boat.
When splitting a private charter quietly wins
If your flight lands late and you are travelling as a group, add it up before you default to the shared desk. A private speedboat charter meets you at the airport speedboat jetty and runs straight to Maafushi harbour on your own schedule, taking about 40 minutes. The boat starts from around $100 and carries up to roughly 15 people, which is the whole point: split four or five ways it lands close to the shared-boat fare per head, and it frees a late arrival from a fixed timetable entirely. Prices climb toward the $150–160 mark for larger boats or odd hours, so it is a group play rather than a solo one, but for a family or a friend group arriving at 11pm with no ferry and no shared boat left running, it is often the only same-day way to actually sleep in Maafushi that night.

Here is the short sequence to run through. Check your landing time against the day. Arriving mid-morning on a weekday? Book a shared speedboat online before you fly, and let the operator meet you at arrivals. Arriving very late with a group and cash to spread? Price a private charter — it may cost less per person than you assume and it ignores the timetable altogether.
The single mistake to avoid is landing on a Friday afternoon having planned around the public ferry, then discovering it doesn't sail and the last shared boat has gone.
