Munich Airport ground transportation
Munich Airport has two terminals (T1 for most airlines, T2 for Lufthansa and Star Alliance) joined by the München Airport Center (MAC), and the S-Bahn station sits directly beneath the MAC between them. Two S-Bahn lines serve the airport: the S8 loops in via the east (Marienplatz in ~38 min) and the S1 via the west (Hauptbahnhof in ~45 min); they alternate so a train leaves roughly every 10 minutes from ~04:00 to past midnight. A single MVV ticket for the whole airport-to-city stretch is about €13-15, but the Airport-City-Day-Ticket (~€17.50) is usually better value as it also covers city trams, buses and U-Bahn for the rest of the day. The Lufthansa Express Bus (open to anyone, not just Lufthansa passengers) runs from both terminals straight to the Hauptbahnhof north side for about €13 in 45-60 min depending on the A9 motorway. Taxis from the ranks outside arrivals run roughly €80-105 to central districts, and pre-booked private transfers offer a fixed fare with flight tracking. For the mountains and neighbouring cities — Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Füssen (for Neuschwanstein) and Nuremberg — the usual pattern is an S-Bahn or regional train to Munich Hauptbahnhof, then an onward DB or ÖBB service, though direct transfers and car hire suit groups and awkward luggage. Buying tickets in Munich
Munich Airport is in the outer MVV zone, so a normal single is pricey; buy the Airport-City-Day-Ticket instead, valid across zones M-5 for the whole day including the S-Bahn in. It covers one adult plus up to three children, with a cheaper group version for 2-5 people. From the airport, S1 and S8 alternate every 10 minutes to the centre (about 40-45 minutes). Buy at the blue MVV machines or in the MVV/MVGO app; machines take contactless. No separate validation needed for machine-dated or app tickets.
Taxi scams & safety in Munich
MUC is safe and orderly. Use the marked taxi ranks at both terminals; cabs are metered (no fixed airport fare) and a city trip is long, often €70-90. There are no aggressive touts. Uber, Bolt and FREE NOW operate but only dispatch licensed private-hire or taxi cars, and a July 2026 Munich rule set minimum app fares, so they no longer undercut taxis; FREE NOW often has the shortest wait. Ride-hail cars collect from the designated pickup zones, not the taxi rank.
Step-free access in Munich
The train works and the airport coach does not, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
- S1 and S8 S-Bahn run from the station beneath the Munich Airport Center, with escalators and fully accessible lifts up to ground level. Around 90 per cent of S-Bahn stations offer step-free platform access and level boarding.
- Where the gap is too wide, trains carry a folding ramp operated by the crew. Wait at the front of the train so the driver can see you.
- The Lufthansa Express Bus has no ramp and is not wheelchair accessible. It is often recommended as the simple option into the city, but not for a wheelchair user.
Munich's U-Bahn and the intercity services from Hauptbahnhof are accessible, so onward travel from the S-Bahn is generally fine.
