Step-free access in Vienna
Vienna is straightforward for step-free travel, but the cheap train and the fast train are not equal here, and the difference is worth knowing before you land.
- City Airport Train (CAT) is fully wheelchair accessible: lifts to the platforms at both the airport and Wien Mitte, no step into the carriage, and two wheelchair spaces in every car.
- S7 S-Bahn, the cheaper option, is accessible only with ÖBB staff assistance, and that must be booked 24 hours in advance. Some intermediate stops still have stairs. If you have not arranged help ahead of time, this is not the train to gamble on.
- Wien Mitte is step-free from the Europaplatz entrance through to every platform, with direct access to the U3 and U4 lifts.
- Most of the Vienna U-Bahn network has lifts, so onward travel across the city is generally manageable.
