Buying tickets in Vienna
Two very different trains serve Vienna Airport. The premium CAT (City Airport Train) runs non-stop to Wien Mitte in 16 minutes for €14.90 single. Far cheaper is the S7 S-Bahn (ÖBB) at about €4.40, roughly 25 minutes to Wien Mitte, with the ticket also covering onward U-Bahn and tram inside Vienna. Buy S7 tickets from ÖBB machines or the ÖBB app; contactless accepted. Note: from 7 September 2026 the S7/REX7 into the centre closes for works, so check current routing before you travel.
Taxi scams & safety in Vienna
Vienna Airport is low-scam. Taxis wait at the official rank outside arrivals; several airport-taxi firms offer fixed flat fares to the centre (commonly around €36-45) booked at their desks, which avoids meter surprises. Decline anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a ride. Uber and Bolt both operate and pick up from a signposted ride-hail area rather than the taxi rank; prices are broadly similar to a flat-fare taxi. Keep your validated public-transport ticket, as inspectors do check.
Step-free access in Vienna
Vienna is straightforward for step-free travel, but the cheap train and the fast train are not equal here, and the difference is worth knowing before you land.
- City Airport Train (CAT) is fully wheelchair accessible: lifts to the platforms at both the airport and Wien Mitte, no step into the carriage, and two wheelchair spaces in every car.
- S7 S-Bahn, the cheaper option, is accessible only with ÖBB staff assistance, and that must be booked 24 hours in advance. Some intermediate stops still have stairs. If you have not arranged help ahead of time, this is not the train to gamble on.
- Wien Mitte is step-free from the Europaplatz entrance through to every platform, with direct access to the U3 and U4 lifts.
- Most of the Vienna U-Bahn network has lifts, so onward travel across the city is generally manageable.
