There is a particular thrill in arriving from the airport and, within the hour, standing before the Gloriette on its green hill, the long baroque façade of Schönbrunn glowing that unmistakable Habsburg yellow. That single ~€4.10 ticket covers the entire trip, S-Bahn and U-Bahn together, no fiddling with a second fare.

Trains depart roughly every 30 minutes, and the whole journey takes around 40 minutes door to platform. It is not the fastest option on paper, but it is the most honest one — you glide in among commuters and schoolchildren, watch the suburbs give way, and step out where emperors once stepped down from their carriages. Do keep hold of your validated ticket; Vienna runs an honesty system, but the inspectors are real and unsentimental about tourists.

The trade is at the ticket window: the CAT combination runs to roughly €14.90, appreciably more than the S7's modest fare. For the difference of a few minutes I would keep the coins for a Sachertorte, but if you have arrived weary and crave a calm, spacious carriage, the premium buys a gentler entrance to the city. The CAT, too, departs around every 30 minutes.

Some occasions — a first visit, a celebration, luggage that refuses to be wrestled onto trains — call for a driver rather than a timetable. A pre-booked private transfer (through ATAV or one of Vienna's local transfer firms) sets a fixed price of roughly €38–48 and takes you door to door in about 30 minutes. The driver is there to greet you in arrivals, which on a first arrival in an unfamiliar city feels like a small courtly welcome. Because the fare is agreed in advance, there are no surprises whatever the traffic does, and it runs 24/7 for those who land at unsociable imperial hours.

The classic metered taxi offers the same door-to-door ease without the booking. You'll find the rank just outside arrivals, and the meter typically settles somewhere around €40–55 for the run out to the western districts where the palace stands. It is the most flexible choice: no reservation, always available — though the final figure depends on traffic and time of day in a way the fixed transfer does not.

• Weigh romance against economy. The S7-plus-U4 at ~€4.10 is a tenth of a taxi and lands you at the same gates; save the splurge for a horse-drawn Fiaker once you're there.
