The choice comes down to a direct coach from the terminal kerb, a train and coach through Kraków, or a car on the zakopianka road, which on a Friday evening can take much longer than its distance suggests.

Buying tickets in Kraków
Train (SKA1, Koleje Małopolskie): 20 PLN to any station named Kraków (Główny, Grzegórzki, Zabłocie, Płaszów and others), 24 PLN to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. Luggage travels free; dogs cost 3 PLN. You can buy tickets from the ticket machine on board (cash or card), from the conductor (cash or card), at the Koleje Małopolskie ticket point at the airport (08:10–19:45, cash and card), on the Koleje Małopolskie website, or through the KOLEO and Jakdojade apps.
City and agglomeration buses (lines 209, 300, night 902): buy your ticket before you board, either from the machine in the arrivals hall on level 0 or from the machine at the bus stop (cash or card). Since 2 March 2026 the main fares are 4 PLN for 15 minutes, 6 PLN for a single trip or 30 minutes, 8 PLN for 60 minutes and 9 PLN for 90 minutes. A 24-hour ticket for zone I+II+III costs 25 PLN. Validate your ticket in the reader as soon as you board. Reduced fares are half price, but they apply only to people entitled to them under Polish rules.
Long-distance coaches (FlixBus, RegioJet, Neobus and others) leave from bus shelter 2 near the terminal footbridge. Book with the operator; prices change with demand.
Taxi scams & safety in Kraków
Kraków Airport Taxi (MPL Services) is the only official taxi service at the airport. Its cars wait at the covered rank right outside the terminal, 24 hours a day. They are black or silver (white if electric), and every car has a card terminal. The zone fares are fixed maximums by distance from the airport: 29 PLN up to 2.9 km, 49, 69, 89, 109 and 129 PLN up to 18.9 km, 149 PLN up to 22.9 km and 169 PLN up to 27 km. They are the same at any hour and on any day. For anything beyond 27 km, agree the price with the driver before you set off; it must not exceed 8 PLN per km. A second drop-off is charged on the meter, and waiting costs 35 PLN per hour.
The zone map is published only as an illustration. Most Old Town and Kazimierz addresses fall into the 109–129 PLN bands, so if a driver quotes much more for a city address, ask which zone he is using. Turn down anyone in the arrivals hall offering a ride who is not part of the official rank or a transfer you booked in advance. To book by phone, call +48 12 258 0 258 or +48 668 307 307 (call centre open 06:00–22:00).

Getting from KRK to Zakopane
The direct coach from the bus bay
Several FlixBus lines call at Kraków Airport on their way to Zakopane, including N1390, N1393, N1362, 1392 and 1395 on the airport's own list of operators. They use the long-distance stop, bus shelter 2, in the bay by the terminal footbridge. FlixBus describes it as the middle stop of the BUS bay in front of the passenger terminal. The timetable page shows a shortest journey of about 2 hours 37 minutes, fares from US$14.48 (about 56 PLN) when checked on 21 October 2026, and a last daily departure from the airport at 18:00.
That last-departure time is what matters. Land after about 17:00 and the direct coach has probably gone, so you will need to go via Kraków. Prices rise as seats fill, so buy in the FlixBus app as soon as your flight time is fixed. Ski bags generally need to be booked as extra luggage with the operator.
Through Kraków: train, then coach
The more flexible public route is the SKA1 train from the airport to Kraków Główny (17 minutes, 20 PLN, departures at :17 and :47 most of the day). From there, walk through the station to the regional coach station next door. Private coach companies run from there to Zakopane frequently through the day, and the trip is usually around two hours, more in weekend traffic. Fares are set by the operators. Travel guides put them at roughly 25–35 PLN, but check at the ticket window or with the driver. In total, reckon on about 45–55 PLN and three hours from the airport.
Trains also run from Kraków Główny to Zakopane, but the mountain line is slow, about three hours, and in autumn 2026 Koleje Małopolskie's only direct service is a single early weekend train. For most arrivals the coach is the better choice.
By car: what the drive is like
From Balice, the fastest road route uses the A4 around the south of Kraków, then the S7 south past Myślenice and the DK47, the road known as the zakopianka, through Nowy Targ. It is about 113 km, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road. On Friday afternoons, at the start of winter holidays and on summer weekends, the last section past Nowy Targ and into Zakopane can jam badly, and two and a half hours or more is common.
Pre-booked transfers are the usual choice for families and ski groups. Suntransfers listed Kraków Airport to Zakopane from about 149.63 EUR (around 653 PLN) on 21 October 2026, and Kiwitaxi's Kraków–Zakopane fares started at about US$198 (around 770 PLN). Split between four skiers that is reasonable, and a booked vehicle can be sized for boards and boot bags, which a random taxi may not take.
The official Kraków Airport Taxi will also go. Beyond its 27 km zone table, the price is agreed with the driver before departure and capped at 8 PLN per km. At 113 km that ceiling is around 900 PLN, so the booked transfer usually works out cheaper.
Season notes
- Ski season on the Polish side of the Tatras generally depends on snow from December into spring. Book the coach or car well ahead for the Christmas and February holiday weeks.
- Krupówki, the main street, is pedestrianised, so drivers drop off at the nearest side street.
- Many guesthouses in Kościelisko, Olcza or Bukowina Tatrzańska are some way from the coach station. A car to the door saves a second taxi.
Heading back to fly home
FlixBus also sells the reverse trip, Zakopane to Kraków Airport, with a scheduled time of about 2 hours 20 minutes on its route page. That is the schedule, not a promise. Sunday afternoons, when weekenders leave the mountains together, are when the zakopianka is at its slowest. For an evening flight on a Sunday, take a coach at least an hour earlier than the timetable alone suggests, or book a car with a generous margin. The same applies in reverse on Friday arrivals.
Which way for whom
A solo hiker landing before mid-afternoon should take the FlixBus from the bay: no change and the cheapest fare. If you land later in the day, go train plus coach via Kraków Główny. A family or a ski group of three or more should book a car and share the fare.
