Buying tickets in Kraków

Train (SKA1, Koleje Małopolskie): 20 PLN to any station named Kraków (Główny, Grzegórzki, Zabłocie, Płaszów and others), 24 PLN to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. Luggage travels free; dogs cost 3 PLN. You can buy tickets from the ticket machine on board (cash or card), from the conductor (cash or card), at the Koleje Małopolskie ticket point at the airport (08:10–19:45, cash and card), on the Koleje Małopolskie website, or through the KOLEO and Jakdojade apps.

City and agglomeration buses (lines 209, 300, night 902): buy your ticket before you board, either from the machine in the arrivals hall on level 0 or from the machine at the bus stop (cash or card). Since 2 March 2026 the main fares are 4 PLN for 15 minutes, 6 PLN for a single trip or 30 minutes, 8 PLN for 60 minutes and 9 PLN for 90 minutes. A 24-hour ticket for zone I+II+III costs 25 PLN. Validate your ticket in the reader as soon as you board. Reduced fares are half price, but they apply only to people entitled to them under Polish rules.

Long-distance coaches (FlixBus, RegioJet, Neobus and others) leave from bus shelter 2 near the terminal footbridge. Book with the operator; prices change with demand.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Kraków

Kraków Airport Taxi (MPL Services) is the only official taxi service at the airport. Its cars wait at the covered rank right outside the terminal, 24 hours a day. They are black or silver (white if electric), and every car has a card terminal. The zone fares are fixed maximums by distance from the airport: 29 PLN up to 2.9 km, 49, 69, 89, 109 and 129 PLN up to 18.9 km, 149 PLN up to 22.9 km and 169 PLN up to 27 km. They are the same at any hour and on any day. For anything beyond 27 km, agree the price with the driver before you set off; it must not exceed 8 PLN per km. A second drop-off is charged on the meter, and waiting costs 35 PLN per hour.

The zone map is published only as an illustration. Most Old Town and Kazimierz addresses fall into the 109–129 PLN bands, so if a driver quotes much more for a city address, ask which zone he is using. Turn down anyone in the arrivals hall offering a ride who is not part of the official rank or a transfer you booked in advance. To book by phone, call +48 12 258 0 258 or +48 668 307 307 (call centre open 06:00–22:00).

Getting from KRK to Wieliczka Salt Mine

One train, no change

Most SKA1 departures from Kraków Airport are through trains: Kraków Airport – Kraków Główny – Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. In the autumn 2026 timetable they leave the airport at 04:17, 05:17 and 06:17, then at 17 and 47 minutes past the hour until 20:47, and then at 21:17, 22:17 and 23:17. The 21:47 is the exception and stops at Główny. A typical run, the 09:17, reaches Kraków Główny at 09:34 and Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia at 10:01. Stay in your seat during the four-minute stop at the main station.

The fare is set by Koleje Małopolskie's airport tariff: 24 PLN from Kraków Airport to Wieliczka, against 20 PLN to any Kraków station. Luggage is free. Buy your ticket from the card-and-cash machine on board, from the conductor, through KOLEO or Jakdojade, or at the Koleje Małopolskie point at the airport, which is open 08:10–19:45.

From the platform to the shaft

The mine's own access page says the walk from Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia station takes a few minutes. The Tourist Route starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft building on ul. Daniłowicza 10, uphill from the station past the town square. The Miners' Route starts at the Regis Shaft on the square itself.

The luggage question

This is the part that catches people out. If you are coming straight from a flight, you will have bags, and the airport's lockers are out of use for now (listed as suspended on its services page). The Tourist Route is a 3.5 km walk underground, down to 135 metres, at a steady 17–18°C, and a wheeled suitcase has no place on it. Check the mine's visitor rules on bags before you set off. The practical alternatives:

  • Go to your Kraków hotel first, drop the bags, and take the train out to Wieliczka from Kraków Główny, which costs less from the city than from the airport.
  • Stay overnight in Wieliczka itself. Several guesthouses near the square are within walking distance of the station.
  • Book a car with luggage space and have it wait or come back for you.

Taxi and transfer prices

Kraków Airport Taxi, the official operator at the rank, uses fixed zone fares up to 27 km. The fastest road route, the A4 motorway around the south of the city, is about 27 km, which puts the trip in the top zone at 169 PLN. Addresses on the near side of Wieliczka may come in at 149 PLN. The journey takes around 30 minutes on a clear motorway. Cards are accepted.

Booking ahead locks the price before you fly. On 21 October 2026 a Suntransfers search for Wieliczka returned cars from about 39.54 EUR (roughly 173 PLN), with Kiwitaxi around 240 PLN for the same run. The useful extra is a driver who can wait while you tour, but agree that separately and in writing.

Tickets for the mine

The mine's English pages list tickets from 121 PLN per person, with the full price depending on ticket type and tour language. Tickets for tours in languages other than Polish or English must be bought online in advance. The Tourist Route is open 08:00–18:00, and the mine puts the average visit at 2–3 hours including the Cracow Saltworks Museum, with more than 800 steps along the way. Allow for that when planning around a flight time.

A city bus? Only from town

Bus 304 runs to Wieliczka from Dworzec Główny Zachód near Galeria Krakowska and needs a zone I+II ticket, but it does not start at the airport. From the terminal you would first need the train or bus 300 into Kraków, which takes longer than simply staying on the SKA1.

Wieliczka and Kraków in one day

Because the line runs airport – city – Wieliczka, the mine fits easily onto a city day. From Kraków Główny the same SKA1 trains reach Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia in about 23 minutes, and Kraków Zabłocie and Grzegórzki are on the way, so you can join the train near Kazimierz without going back to the main station.

Coming back

Return trains from Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia run back through Kraków Główny to the airport, so the reverse trip is just as direct. The last one in the current timetable leaves Wieliczka at 23:11 and reaches the airport at 23:53. Allow about 45 minutes, plus a few minutes for the walk down from the shaft, when you are timing an evening flight.
