Getting from SZG to Schladming
Four mountains and a market town
Schladming is not a purpose-built resort. It is a working town in the Ennstal that happens to have four linked ski mountains above it โ Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm โ strung west to east along the valley with the Dachstein glacier facing them from the other side.
Once a year the Planai hosts the night slalom, and something like fifty thousand people pack into the finish area under floodlights in January. For the rest of the season it is a sane, well-organised place with a lot of intermediate terrain and less posturing than the Tyrolean resorts.
By train, with one change
The railway does reach Schladming, but not directly from Salzburg. Take city bus 2 from the terminal to the Hauptbahnhof โ twenty-three minutes, โฌ2.50, daily โ then head south on the Tauern line and east along the Ennstal, usually changing at Bischofshofen.
Fares start around โฌ10 and the whole thing from the terminal takes about two and a half hours with the connection. It is cheap and the second half of the ride through the Ennstal is worth the window seat. Schladming's station is roughly a ten-minute walk from the centre and the Planai gondola, so no onward transport is needed if you are staying in town.
The valley problem
That last condition does a lot of work. Schladming's accommodation spreads well beyond the town โ Rohrmoos on the slope above, Pichl and Haus further down the valley, Ramsau up on the Dachstein plateau. None of those are on the railway, and several are a proper drive rather than a walk.
If your booking names any of them, the train leaves you with a second journey to solve. That is the main reason people here pay for a transfer even though a station exists.
Transfers
Shared minibuses start around โฌ32 and are quoted at an hour and forty-five. They are often combined with Flachau and Radstadt on the same eastbound run, which adds stops before yours.
Private cars are โฌ150 to โฌ220 for the vehicle โ competitive split four ways, and the option that actually delivers you to an address in Rohrmoos or Haus rather than to the town centre.
Both are affected by race week. During the night slalom the roads into Schladming are managed, parking is closed off and journey times stretch. If you are arriving that week and not there for the race, assume everything takes an hour longer than advertised.
Taking the wheel
Rental here opens near โฌ40 a day. The route is Tauern motorway south, then a broad valley road east โ one of the easier winter drives from this airport, with no pass and nothing steep until you turn off up to Rohrmoos or Ramsau.
A car is more useful here than in most resorts, because the four mountains have separate base stations spread along fifteen kilometres of valley. The ski bus connects them and is free with a lift pass, but it runs to a timetable and a car does not. Austrian rules put cars on winter tyres from November until mid-April.
Ski amadรฉ, and what the pass covers
Schladming sits inside Ski amadรฉ, which links a large number of Austrian resorts across several valleys on a single pass โ Flachau, Wagrain, Zauchensee and the Gastein valley among them. That is a genuine advantage if you have a car and a weather-watching habit, since you can move to wherever the snow is. Without a car it is mostly theoretical.
Summer, and the Dachstein
Schladming has a genuine second season. The Dachstein glacier opposite is reachable by cable car year-round and keeps a small ski area running through the summer, while the valley itself turns into a mountain-biking and hiking base with the same lifts carrying bikes instead of skis.
The transport is identical in July โ bus 2, train via Bischofshofen, or a road transfer โ but the shared ski shuttles thin out considerably outside the winter season, so a summer arrival is more likely to need the railway or a private car.
