Getting from SZG to Flachau
The middle of the biggest lift network in Austria
Flachau's significance is positional. It sits in the Salzburg Pongau at the centre of Ski amadé, which links something like two dozen resorts across several valleys onto one pass — Wagrain and Alpendorf to the east, Zauchensee and Kleinarl south, the Gastein valley beyond that, Schladming further out. From Flachau you can ski across a good part of it without repeating yourself.
The village itself is a family resort: wide, well-groomed, gentle terrain, a lot of ski school, and an improbable production line of World Cup racers — Hermann Maier grew up here and the floodlit night slalom on the Hermann Maier Weltcupstrecke is a fixture.

It exists and it is awkward. Postbus line 270 links Salzburg Hauptbahnhof with Eben P+R, which is close to Flachau, and from there a local service covers the last stretch. Total around €12 to €20 and well over two hours once the airport leg is counted.
The problem is that 270 runs to a reduced timetable in winter. That is the opposite of what you want — the season when most people travel is the season with fewest buses. It is workable for a daylight arrival if you check the day's schedule first. As a plan for an evening flight it is unreliable, and the fallback at that hour is an expensive taxi from Eben or Altenmarkt.
Driving, which the geography rewards

With a car you can drive twenty minutes to wherever the snow fell overnight; without one you ski Flachau. The tyre rule runs November to mid-April and applies to hire cars like any other.
Who this resort suits
Worth being direct, because it affects whether the transfer is worth booking at all. Flachau is low by Alpine standards — the village is around 900 metres — so it leans on snowmaking, and the terrain is broad and forgiving rather than challenging. It is a very good week for families and mixed-ability groups and a dull one for anyone chasing steep ground, who would be better served further up the Tauern in Obertauern or over in the Gastein valley.
Arriving on a Saturday
Flachau is close enough to Salzburg to be a weekend destination for Austrians as well as a week destination for foreign visitors, and the two collide on Saturdays. Charter flights land through the morning, the Tauern motorway carries Vienna and Salzburg traffic south from midday, and the changeover in the village itself happens in the same window.
Practically, that means the seventy-minute transfer can take ninety, and check-in queues at the accommodation are long in the early afternoon. A Sunday or midweek arrival avoids all of it, and if you are stuck with Saturday, book the transfer in advance rather than hoping to buy a seat on arrival.
