Getting from SZG to Bad Gastein
The one where the train wins outright
Most ski journeys from Salzburg end with a minibus, because the resorts sit up valleys the railway never entered. Bad Gastein is the exception and it is a decisive one: hourly ÖBB InterCity services run from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof directly into the town, no changes, in about an hour and twenty, from roughly €11.
Get there by taking city bus 2 from the terminal to the Hauptbahnhof — twenty-three minutes, about €2.50, running every day including Sundays when line 10 does not. Then south on the Tauern line. Total journey from the terminal is a little under two hours and the fare, booked ahead, undercuts every transfer by a wide margin.
The station sits above the town on the valley side, with a lift and a short walk down into the centre. That is worth knowing because Bad Gastein is built in tiers and "down into the centre" is literal.
A spa town that skied
Bad Gastein is unlike anywhere else on this page. It grew in the nineteenth century around thermal springs that come out of the rock at over forty degrees, and the Habsburg-era hotels were built into a gorge with a waterfall running through the middle of the town. When the fashion for taking the waters faded in the 1970s, several of those buildings simply closed and stood empty for decades.
They are being reopened one at a time now, which has given the place an odd, appealing texture — Belle Époque facades, contemporary art in old ballrooms, and a ski area above that is genuinely large. Sportgastein at the head of the valley is the high, snow-sure end of it.
When to pay for a transfer instead
Shared minibuses run €29 to €50 and take about the same time as the train. On a like-for-like basis the railway is cheaper and no slower, so the case for a transfer is specific rather than general.
It is worth it if your hotel is up one of the side roads — several of the larger spa hotels are well above the station on the valley wall — or if you are staying in Bad Hofgastein, which is a separate town a few kilometres down the valley with its own ski area access. Both mean a further leg from the station that a transfer removes.
A private car is €160 to €240 per vehicle. Its argument here is the same one: the town's geography. Bad Gastein is stacked down a ravine on several levels connected by a road that doubles back on itself, and hotel entrances are not where a map suggests. Driving, and the car train
Expect around €40 a day upwards. The Tauern motorway runs most of the way south from Salzburg and the valley road after it is straightforward.
One local feature worth knowing about if you are continuing south: the Tauern rail tunnel carries a car-shuttle service from Böckstein, just above Bad Gastein, through the mountain to Mallnitz in Carinthia. It saves a long detour and runs frequently. The usual seasonal tyre requirement applies, November to mid-April.
The thermal water, since it changes the trip
Two large thermal complexes sit in the valley — one in Bad Gastein, a bigger one in Bad Hofgastein — and both are open to day visitors. A good share of people who come here ski four days and spend the fifth in the water, which is a different kind of week from Saalbach or Ischgl and worth factoring into where you stay.
Booking the train ticket
ÖBB fares on this route move a great deal with how far ahead you buy. Sparschiene advance tickets start near €11 and are fixed to a specific train; walk-up fares on the day run to €28 or more for the same seat. If your flight time is reliable, booking the connection the week before is worth twenty euros a head.
The airport bus is separate and cannot be combined into the rail ticket, so budget the €2.50 for line 2 on top and allow a margin — the Hauptbahnhof is twenty-three minutes away and the InterCity will not wait.
