It photographs extraordinarily well, which is the root of both its popularity and its problems: roughly eight hundred people live there and a great many more arrive every day in season.

Start with what does not exist. No scheduled service runs from Salzburg Airport to Hallstatt. The public route is a chain: city bus 2 from the terminal to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, then a Postbus and a train through the Salzkammergut, usually via Bad Ischl or Attnang-Puchheim depending on the connection.

The final stage is at least memorable. Hallstatt's railway station is on the opposite shore of the lake, and a small ferry meets the trains to cross to the village. Arriving that way, with the houses stacked up the cliff ahead of you, is the view everyone comes for. It is also, with luggage and in the dark, a lot of transfers.
The realistic options
A private transfer costs โฌ120 to โฌ180 and takes about seventy-five minutes. For anyone with luggage this is the honest recommendation โ it is a third of the public journey time and it sidesteps the parking question entirely.
Scheduled shuttle operators run minibuses between Salzburg and Hallstatt in season, some collecting at the airport, from around โฌ30 to โฌ55. They are considerably cheaper than a private car and much quicker than the public chain. The catch is fixed departure times that may not line up with your landing.
Hiring a car, and reading the parking rules first
Hire opens near โฌ38 a day. The drive is seventy kilometres, about an hour and a quarter, through the Salzkammergut lake district โ genuinely one of the nicer hours of driving in Austria.
Then you arrive. Hallstatt restricts traffic in the village itself and directs visitors to car parks outside, which fill early in summer and involve a walk in along the lakeshore. Charges apply and enforcement is real. None of this is a reason to avoid a car if you are touring the region โ St. Wolfgang, Gosau, the Dachstein caves and the lakes all reward one โ but it is a reason not to assume you will park outside your guesthouse.
The November-to-mid-April tyre rule applies, and the roads around the lakes are shaded and hold ice long after the sun is out.
When to go, which changes everything
Hallstatt in July at midday is a queue. Hallstatt at eight in the morning, or in November, or on a wet Tuesday in March, is the place people imagine. If your schedule allows any flexibility, staying overnight rather than day-tripping transforms it โ the coaches leave in the late afternoon and the village becomes quiet.
That also affects the transport choice: an overnight stay makes the three-hour public journey more tolerable, since you are not spending seven hours of one day travelling.
The salt mine and the timing of it
Most of the reason to stay rather than photograph is above the village. The Salzwelten mine is reached by funicular from the edge of Hallstatt and includes the oldest known salt works in the world, with a prehistoric burial ground alongside it that gave the entire European Hallstatt culture its name.
It closes for part of the winter and the funicular with it, which is worth checking before planning a January visit around it. In summer the queue for the funicular is its own consideration, and going first thing is the difference between twenty minutes and an hour.
