Ribeira is the stretch of Porto's old town that runs down to the Douro: stacked houses, the Praça da Ribeira and the double-deck Dom Luís I bridge. Getting there from the airport is simple on a single ticket. The awkward part is the final few hundred metres: steep lanes, steps and granite paving, much of it inside a UNESCO-listed historic centre. Below is how to plan the whole trip, including that last stretch.

Buying tickets in Porto

Andante is the shared ticket for the Porto metropolitan area. It covers the metro, STCP buses and CP urban trains within the zones you pay for. The paper Andante Azul card costs €0.60, is rechargeable, and can only be used by one person per journey. Buy and top it up at the ticket machines in Aeroporto metro station, just outside the terminal. Each person in a group needs their own card.

2026 single fares (Metro do Porto): Z2 €1.40 (valid 1 h), Z3 €1.85 (1 h), Z4 €2.30 (1 h 15), Z5 €2.80 (1 h 30). You can load from 1 to 30 trips of the same type. A 10-trip Z4 load costs €23.00. An Andante 24 Z4 costs €8.55 for 24 hours, and the tourist Andante Tour 1 and Tour 3 cost €7.75 and €16.55. Central Porto (Trindade, Aliados, São Bento, Campanhã) needs a Z4 from the airport. For other destinations, check the destination list posted in the station.

Contactless bank cards work on the marked validators at Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música, Trindade and the central stations. Each tap is charged as a Z4 (€2.30) and is valid for 1 h 15, with a daily cap of €7.75. Validate every time you board or change line, at most 10 minutes before you travel. On STCP buses the driver sells a single-journey ticket for €2.50.

CP trains to Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro run outside the Andante area, so buy a CP ticket at Campanhã (from a machine, the ticket office or the CP app). GetBus coach tickets are sold online, in the GetBus app, at the GetBus counter in the terminal (daily 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00) or from the driver.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Porto

Take taxis only from the official rank outside arrivals. Licensed Porto taxis are black with a green roof or beige, and they carry a meter and a roof sign. Portugal's new national taxi tariff, published in June 2026, has been postponed. Until it takes effect, the meter runs on the old structure: a flag fall of about €3.25, a €1.60 supplement for each bag larger than 55×35×20 cm, a higher rate at night, at weekends and on holidays, and any tolls added on top. Expect roughly €25–35 to central Porto. Ask for the receipt (recibo), which shows the licence number.

Ignore anyone in the hall offering a ride. Unlicensed drivers do approach arriving passengers, and their prices are whatever they decide. App rides (Uber, Bolt) are legal in Portugal and pick up in the designated area, not at the taxi rank.

On the metro, the risk is a fine, not a scam. You must validate the Andante card every time you board or change, even inside your time window. Inspectors check line E regularly, and an unvalidated card counts as travelling without a ticket.

Getting around

Step-free access in Porto

Porto Airport runs MyWay, a free assistance service for passengers with a disability or reduced mobility, on departure, in transit and on arrival. Request it from your airline or travel agent when you book, or at least 48 hours before the published departure time.

  • On arrival, the airline notifies MyWay, and staff assist from your aircraft seat to your next point of departure.
  • When you arrive for a flight, use the MyWay phone at the marked Designated Point of Arrival to call for help with check-in, security, border control and boarding.
  • A companion can stay with you throughout if you cannot travel without one.
  • Reserved spaces for cars with the reduced-mobility badge are available in all the airport car parks, near the exits.

Getting from OPO to Ribeira (riverside old town)

A district built downhill

Ribeira is the lowest part of the city. Porto grew up the slopes from its river quay, and that layout still shapes how you arrive today. The metro runs along the higher ground. Trains do not come down to the waterfront, so every public-transport route ends with a walk downhill. Going down is easy. Coming back up with a suitcase on the day you fly home is harder, and it is worth planning before you book a room by the river.

Metro plus one change

The standard route is metro line E (violet) from Aeroporto station, just outside the terminal, to Trindade. It takes around half an hour. At Trindade, go down to the line D (yellow) platforms and ride two stops south to São Bento. One Andante Z4 trip at €2.30 covers both trains, as long as you validate again at Trindade and finish within the 1 h 15 the ticket allows. If you do not already have an Andante card, add €0.60 for one. Alternatively, tap a contactless bank card at the marked validators, which costs the same Z4 fare.

São Bento is the railway station with the blue-and-white azulejo panels in its main hall. From there, the walk to the Praça da Ribeira takes about ten minutes. Head down Rua de Mouzinho da Silveira or through the lanes of the Sé quarter. Expect steep cobbled streets the whole way. Small suitcase wheels struggle on them.

Line E runs from about 06:00 until the last departure from the airport at around 00:40, under the timetable in force since September 2026. The wait is short on a weekday afternoon (about 15 minutes) and longer, up to 30 minutes, late in the evening. Some trains turn off before Trindade towards Campanhã and Estádio do Dragão. The display at the platform shows which train is next.

The bus that drops you higher up

STCP bus 601 runs to Cordoaria, the square next to the Clérigos tower, and bus 602 reaches it via Padrão de Moreira. Both run from about 05:30 to midnight, around every 25 minutes, with the same Z4 Andante fare or €2.50 bought on board. From Cordoaria, the walk down to the river through the Rua das Flores area takes roughly 15 minutes. This route makes sense if you are staying in the upper old town rather than on the quayside itself.

By car: get as close as the streets allow

A taxi from the official rank outside arrivals takes about 26 minutes outside rush hour. The meter typically shows €25–35. The old tariff still applies in autumn 2026, because the national reform has been postponed. The meter starts at roughly €3.25, adds €1.60 for every large case, and runs faster at night and at weekends. Give the driver your exact address. Some old-town lanes are pedestrianised or too narrow for cars, so expect to be dropped on the riverside road or at the nearest corner the car can reach.

Pre-booked transfers to Ribeira are quoted at about €24 for a sedan, €29 for an MPV and €40 for a seven-seat minivan. The main advantage is that the price is fixed: it is the same at 2 a.m., on a Sunday, or with a car full of bags. For a family arriving at night that removes most of the uncertainty.

Arriving late

After the last metro, STCP night line 3M runs hourly to Avenida dos Aliados from about 00:30 to 05:30. From Aliados it is a 15-minute walk downhill to the river. It works, but at 2 a.m. with luggage, a taxi or a booked car is the sensible choice.

A few notes on the old town

  • Many riverside apartments are reached by narrow stairwells without lifts. Check with your host before you arrive.
  • The lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge carries cars and pedestrians across to Vila Nova de Gaia. The upper deck carries metro line D and pedestrians.
  • The Funicular dos Guindais links the riverside near the bridge with Batalha, higher up the hill. It is a useful way back up if your luggage is heavy. It is a separate service with its own fare, so check its hours before relying on it.

In short: one metro ticket, one change and a walk downhill gets you to the river for €2.30. For a late landing, for heavy luggage, or for the return trip up the hill, a car is usually worth considering.
