Braga is Portugal's third city: an archbishopric with a compact baroque centre and the Bom Jesus sanctuary on the hill above. From Porto Airport there are three realistic ways to get there: a direct coach, a metro-and-train combination, or a car. They differ a lot in time and cost, so compare them before you choose.

Buying tickets in Porto

Andante is the shared ticket for the Porto metropolitan area. It covers the metro, STCP buses and CP urban trains within the zones you pay for. The paper Andante Azul card costs €0.60, is rechargeable, and can only be used by one person per journey. Buy and top it up at the ticket machines in Aeroporto metro station, just outside the terminal. Each person in a group needs their own card.

2026 single fares (Metro do Porto): Z2 €1.40 (valid 1 h), Z3 €1.85 (1 h), Z4 €2.30 (1 h 15), Z5 €2.80 (1 h 30). You can load from 1 to 30 trips of the same type. A 10-trip Z4 load costs €23.00. An Andante 24 Z4 costs €8.55 for 24 hours, and the tourist Andante Tour 1 and Tour 3 cost €7.75 and €16.55. Central Porto (Trindade, Aliados, São Bento, Campanhã) needs a Z4 from the airport. For other destinations, check the destination list posted in the station.

Contactless bank cards work on the marked validators at Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música, Trindade and the central stations. Each tap is charged as a Z4 (€2.30) and is valid for 1 h 15, with a daily cap of €7.75. Validate every time you board or change line, at most 10 minutes before you travel. On STCP buses the driver sells a single-journey ticket for €2.50.

CP trains to Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro run outside the Andante area, so buy a CP ticket at Campanhã (from a machine, the ticket office or the CP app). GetBus coach tickets are sold online, in the GetBus app, at the GetBus counter in the terminal (daily 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00) or from the driver.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Porto

Take taxis only from the official rank outside arrivals. Licensed Porto taxis are black with a green roof or beige, and they carry a meter and a roof sign. Portugal's new national taxi tariff, published in June 2026, has been postponed. Until it takes effect, the meter runs on the old structure: a flag fall of about €3.25, a €1.60 supplement for each bag larger than 55×35×20 cm, a higher rate at night, at weekends and on holidays, and any tolls added on top. Expect roughly €25–35 to central Porto. Ask for the receipt (recibo), which shows the licence number.

Ignore anyone in the hall offering a ride. Unlicensed drivers do approach arriving passengers, and their prices are whatever they decide. App rides (Uber, Bolt) are legal in Portugal and pick up in the designated area, not at the taxi rank.

On the metro, the risk is a fine, not a scam. You must validate the Andante card every time you board or change, even inside your time window. Inspectors check line E regularly, and an unvalidated card counts as travelling without a ticket.

Getting around

Step-free access in Porto

Porto Airport runs MyWay, a free assistance service for passengers with a disability or reduced mobility, on departure, in transit and on arrival. Request it from your airline or travel agent when you book, or at least 48 hours before the published departure time.

  • On arrival, the airline notifies MyWay, and staff assist from your aircraft seat to your next point of departure.
  • When you arrive for a flight, use the MyWay phone at the marked Designated Point of Arrival to call for help with check-in, security, border control and boarding.
  • A companion can stay with you throughout if you cannot travel without one.
  • Reserved spaces for cars with the reduced-mobility badge are available in all the airport car parks, near the exits.

Getting from OPO to Braga

Three ways to get there

For most people the answer is the GetBus coach. It is direct and non-stop, takes 45 minutes and costs from €9. It leaves from the coach park on the arrivals floor of the terminal. The metro plus train option saves about three euros but takes over twice as long. A private car costs six times as much as the coach but takes you to your door. Each option is set out below.

Option 1 – GetBus, airport to Braga bus station

GetBus runs only airport routes and has served Braga since 2012. Coaches leave from P8, the coach parking area on the arrivals level, and arrive at platform 20 of Braga's central bus station. The published timetable from the airport is:

00:45 · 05:00 · 07:00 · 08:30 · 09:30 · 10:30 · 11:30 · 12:30 · 13:30 · 14:30 · 15:30 · 16:30 · 17:45 · 19:00 · 20:30 · 23:00

That is 16 departures a day, every day including holidays. The 00:45 departure covers late arrivals. Fares start at €9.00 one way on the English site. The Portuguese site has advertised lower promotional fares, so check both before you pay. Buy online, in the GetBus app, at the GetBus counter in the terminal (open 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00) or from the driver by cash or card. Each passenger may carry two large bags up to 32 kg plus one small bag.

The flexible ticket is the most useful option for anyone flying in. If your flight is late and you miss your booked coach, you can take the next departure without changing the booking. The coach will not wait for you, but you do not lose the fare.

Option 2 – metro, then the CP urban train

Take metro line E from Aeroporto to Trindade and change for Campanhã, or catch a line E train that runs through to Estádio do Dragão via Campanhã. Either way, one Andante Z4 trip at €2.30 covers it, plus €0.60 for a new card. At Campanhã, buy a CP ticket to Braga. The urban train costs €3.60 and takes 51 to 68 minutes. On the day we checked (22 October 2026), trains ran from 06:10 to 23:15, about once or twice an hour. Faster Alfa Pendular (€17, 39 minutes) and Intercidades (€13.55) trains run a few times a day on the same line.

Total: about €5.90 and around two hours, once you include the metro ride, the change and the wait for a train. This suits travellers on a tight budget, travellers who have missed the last convenient coach, and anyone staying near Braga railway station, which is on the west side of the centre. CP has announced a strike for 30 October 2026, so check service status around that date.

Option 3 – car to the door

A pre-booked transfer is quoted at about €56 for a sedan (up to three people), about €80 for an MPV and about €93 for a seven-seat minivan. Tolls are included, and the drive takes roughly 41 minutes on the A3 motorway. Split four ways, an MPV is about €20 each, which is reasonable value for a family with luggage going to a hotel or house outside the centre.

A metered taxi from the airport rank runs on the old tariff, because the 2026 reform has been postponed. Third-party estimates put the daytime fare at around €50. Night and holiday rates are about 20% higher, and motorway tolls are added on top, so the final fare can easily reach the price of a pre-booked car. Ask the driver for an estimate before you set off. The fixed €56 transfer is more predictable.

Night arrivals

If you land late, the 23:00 and 00:45 GetBus departures are the ones to aim for. The last CP urban train from Campanhã leaves at around 23:15, with a late service in the early hours on some days, and you would need the metro to get there first. If you land after midnight, the 00:45 coach is your best public option. After that, only a taxi or a pre-booked car will take you to Braga before morning.

On arrival in Braga

The central bus station is a short walk north of the historic centre. The Sé cathedral and the Avenida da Liberdade are within about 15 minutes on foot. Bom Jesus do Monte is a separate trip uphill east of the city, served by local buses and a historic water-powered funicular.
