Guimarães calls itself the birthplace of Portugal: Afonso Henriques, the first king, is traditionally linked to its castle. Its medieval centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The town is closer to the airport than many people expect. A direct coach covers the distance in 40 minutes, so you can be in the old squares within an hour of collecting your bags. Buying tickets in Porto

Andante is the shared ticket for the Porto metropolitan area. It covers the metro, STCP buses and CP urban trains within the zones you pay for. The paper Andante Azul card costs €0.60, is rechargeable, and can only be used by one person per journey. Buy and top it up at the ticket machines in Aeroporto metro station, just outside the terminal. Each person in a group needs their own card.

2026 single fares (Metro do Porto): Z2 €1.40 (valid 1 h), Z3 €1.85 (1 h), Z4 €2.30 (1 h 15), Z5 €2.80 (1 h 30). You can load from 1 to 30 trips of the same type. A 10-trip Z4 load costs €23.00. An Andante 24 Z4 costs €8.55 for 24 hours, and the tourist Andante Tour 1 and Tour 3 cost €7.75 and €16.55. Central Porto (Trindade, Aliados, São Bento, Campanhã) needs a Z4 from the airport. For other destinations, check the destination list posted in the station.

Contactless bank cards work on the marked validators at Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música, Trindade and the central stations. Each tap is charged as a Z4 (€2.30) and is valid for 1 h 15, with a daily cap of €7.75. Validate every time you board or change line, at most 10 minutes before you travel. On STCP buses the driver sells a single-journey ticket for €2.50.

CP trains to Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro run outside the Andante area, so buy a CP ticket at Campanhã (from a machine, the ticket office or the CP app). GetBus coach tickets are sold online, in the GetBus app, at the GetBus counter in the terminal (daily 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00) or from the driver.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Porto

Take taxis only from the official rank outside arrivals. Licensed Porto taxis are black with a green roof or beige, and they carry a meter and a roof sign. Portugal's new national taxi tariff, published in June 2026, has been postponed. Until it takes effect, the meter runs on the old structure: a flag fall of about €3.25, a €1.60 supplement for each bag larger than 55×35×20 cm, a higher rate at night, at weekends and on holidays, and any tolls added on top. Expect roughly €25–35 to central Porto. Ask for the receipt (recibo), which shows the licence number.

Ignore anyone in the hall offering a ride. Unlicensed drivers do approach arriving passengers, and their prices are whatever they decide. App rides (Uber, Bolt) are legal in Portugal and pick up in the designated area, not at the taxi rank.

On the metro, the risk is a fine, not a scam. You must validate the Andante card every time you board or change, even inside your time window. Inspectors check line E regularly, and an unvalidated card counts as travelling without a ticket.

Getting around

Step-free access in Porto

Porto Airport runs MyWay, a free assistance service for passengers with a disability or reduced mobility, on departure, in transit and on arrival. Request it from your airline or travel agent when you book, or at least 48 hours before the published departure time.

  • On arrival, the airline notifies MyWay, and staff assist from your aircraft seat to your next point of departure.
  • When you arrive for a flight, use the MyWay phone at the marked Designated Point of Arrival to call for help with check-in, security, border control and boarding.
  • A companion can stay with you throughout if you cannot travel without one.
  • Reserved spaces for cars with the reduced-mobility badge are available in all the airport car parks, near the exits.

Getting from OPO to Guimarães

From the airport to the old town

Guimarães lies inland, in the hills of the Minho, about 54 km from the airport by motorway. In the 12th century it was the seat of the County of Portugal. Today its historic core is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes: the Largo da Oliveira, the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, and the castle on its rocky hill. The town itself is easy to walk around. The planning that matters is how you get there from the airport.

The direct coach

GetBus runs a direct, non-stop service between the airport and Guimarães bus station (platform 8), which is within walking distance of the town centre. Coaches leave from P8, the coach park on the arrivals level of the terminal. The journey takes about 40 minutes.

Departures from the airport, every day including holidays:

  • Morning: 05:00 · 09:00 · 10:30
  • Afternoon: 13:00 · 14:15 · 15:30 · 16:30 · 17:45
  • Evening and night: 19:30 · 20:45 · 23:00 · 00:45

There is a gap between 05:00 and 09:00, and another between 10:30 and 13:00. If you land in one of those gaps, compare the wait with the train option below. Fares start at €9.00 one way. Book online or in the GetBus app, at the GetBus counter in the terminal (09:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00), or pay the driver by cash or card. The early-morning coaches can fill up, so GetBus recommends booking the day before. Each passenger can bring two large bags up to 32 kg and one small one. If your flight is delayed, a flexible ticket lets you take the next coach without changing the booking.

By rail, via Campanhã

Guimarães is at the end of a CP branch line. To get there, first take metro line E from the airport to Campanhã: either a train running through to Estádio do Dragão, or a train to Trindade and then any eastbound line. The metro part is a Z4 fare, €2.30, plus €0.60 for the card. At Campanhã, buy a CP ticket. The urban train to Guimarães costs €3.60, takes 57 to 78 minutes, and runs roughly hourly. On the day we checked (22 October 2026) it ran from 06:25 to a last departure at 23:25. One Intercidades service (€13.55) is a little faster.

Door to door, this route costs about €5.90 and usually takes over two hours. It is worth it if you land at 06:30 and do not want to wait for the 09:00 coach, or if you want to save a few euros and are not in a hurry. Guimarães railway station is south of the historic centre, about a 15-minute walk. CP has announced a strike for 30 October 2026, so check service notices around that date.

By car

Pre-booked transfers are quoted at about €56 for a sedan, €81 for an MPV and about €95 for a seven-seat minivan, with tolls included. The drive takes roughly 41 minutes. For three people the sedan costs about €19 each and takes you to the door, which matters because several hotels and guesthouses in the old town are on pedestrian lanes.

A metered taxi from the rank runs on the old national tariff, because the 2026 reform has been postponed. Over this distance, with motorway tolls added, expect a fare broadly similar to the Braga trip, roughly €50–70 depending on the hour. Agree the likely fare with the driver before you set off.

Late landings

The last two coaches leave the airport at 23:00 and 00:45. The last CP train from Campanhã leaves at around 23:25, and you need to allow at least 40 minutes on the metro to reach it. If you land after 00:30, aim for the 00:45 coach. After that, a booked car is the only practical option.

After you arrive

  • From the bus station, walk towards the Largo do Toural and on into the medieval streets.
  • The Penha cable car climbs to the hilltop sanctuary above the town. It is a separate trip with its own ticket.
  • Braga is roughly half an hour away by road, so many visitors combine the two towns. GetBus runs separate airport services to each, which makes it easy to fly into one and out of the other.
