Buying tickets in Porto

Andante is the shared ticket for the Porto metropolitan area. It covers the metro, STCP buses and CP urban trains within the zones you pay for. The paper Andante Azul card costs €0.60, is rechargeable, and can only be used by one person per journey. Buy and top it up at the ticket machines in Aeroporto metro station, just outside the terminal. Each person in a group needs their own card.

2026 single fares (Metro do Porto): Z2 €1.40 (valid 1 h), Z3 €1.85 (1 h), Z4 €2.30 (1 h 15), Z5 €2.80 (1 h 30). You can load from 1 to 30 trips of the same type. A 10-trip Z4 load costs €23.00. An Andante 24 Z4 costs €8.55 for 24 hours, and the tourist Andante Tour 1 and Tour 3 cost €7.75 and €16.55. Central Porto (Trindade, Aliados, São Bento, Campanhã) needs a Z4 from the airport. For other destinations, check the destination list posted in the station.

Contactless bank cards work on the marked validators at Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música, Trindade and the central stations. Each tap is charged as a Z4 (€2.30) and is valid for 1 h 15, with a daily cap of €7.75. Validate every time you board or change line, at most 10 minutes before you travel. On STCP buses the driver sells a single-journey ticket for €2.50.

CP trains to Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro run outside the Andante area, so buy a CP ticket at Campanhã (from a machine, the ticket office or the CP app). GetBus coach tickets are sold online, in the GetBus app, at the GetBus counter in the terminal (daily 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00) or from the driver.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Porto

Take taxis only from the official rank outside arrivals. Licensed Porto taxis are black with a green roof or beige, and they carry a meter and a roof sign. Portugal's new national taxi tariff, published in June 2026, has been postponed. Until it takes effect, the meter runs on the old structure: a flag fall of about €3.25, a €1.60 supplement for each bag larger than 55×35×20 cm, a higher rate at night, at weekends and on holidays, and any tolls added on top. Expect roughly €25–35 to central Porto. Ask for the receipt (recibo), which shows the licence number.

Ignore anyone in the hall offering a ride. Unlicensed drivers do approach arriving passengers, and their prices are whatever they decide. App rides (Uber, Bolt) are legal in Portugal and pick up in the designated area, not at the taxi rank.

On the metro, the risk is a fine, not a scam. You must validate the Andante card every time you board or change, even inside your time window. Inspectors check line E regularly, and an unvalidated card counts as travelling without a ticket.

Getting around

Step-free access in Porto

Porto Airport runs MyWay, a free assistance service for passengers with a disability or reduced mobility, on departure, in transit and on arrival. Request it from your airline or travel agent when you book, or at least 48 hours before the published departure time.

  • On arrival, the airline notifies MyWay, and staff assist from your aircraft seat to your next point of departure.
  • When you arrive for a flight, use the MyWay phone at the marked Designated Point of Arrival to call for help with check-in, security, border control and boarding.
  • A companion can stay with you throughout if you cannot travel without one.
  • Reserved spaces for cars with the reduced-mobility badge are available in all the airport car parks, near the exits.

Getting from OPO to Aveiro

Aveiro by rail

Aveiro is on Portugal's main railway, the Linha do Norte between Porto and Lisbon, and Porto Campanhã is where you join it. The trip has two stages. First, ride metro line E from the airport station, just outside the terminal, to Campanhã. Some trains run directly there on their way to Estádio do Dragão. Otherwise, change at Trindade to any eastbound line. One Andante Z4 trip at €2.30 covers it, plus €0.60 if you need a new card. The metro takes about 40 minutes.

Then the railway. CP offers three types of train from Campanhã to Aveiro, all checked on the CP journey planner for 22 October 2026:

  • Urbano (Porto urban line): €3.95, 53–68 minutes, usually twice an hour through the day. Services ran from 04:55 to 23:00 on the day we checked, plus a train at midnight.
  • Intercidades: €13.55, about 40 minutes, roughly every two hours.
  • Alfa Pendular: €17.00, 34 minutes, about hourly for much of the day.

Buy the CP ticket at Campanhã from a machine, the ticket office or the CP app. Aveiro is outside the Andante area, so your metro card will not cover this part of the trip. The urban train is the cheapest option, at €6.25 for the whole trip including the metro. The Alfa Pendular saves about 25 minutes for an extra €13. In practice the wait for a connection at Campanhã often matters more than the train type, so take whichever leaves first.

The urban trains are slow because they stop at the coastal towns along the Linha do Norte, including Espinho and Ovar. The Alfa Pendular and Intercidades only stop at a few places. Before you board at Campanhã, check that Aveiro is on the train's list of stops, either on the platform display or in the CP app. Many long-distance trains continue to Coimbra and Lisbon,, and a short-running urban train may stop short of Aveiro.

Aveiro station is on the edge of the centre. Its old building is decorated with azulejo panels of regional scenes. The canals and the main square are about a 15-minute walk away along Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho.

Direct coaches

The airport's transport page lists Rede Expressos and FlixBus among the coach operators serving the airport. Booking platforms show direct airport-to-Aveiro coaches on both. Fares vary with demand, typically from about €5 to €17, and the trip takes around 65 to 80 minutes. The coach is worth checking if you have heavy luggage and want to avoid two changes. Book on the operators' own sites to see the current timetable, which we could not confirm against an official source.

Driving down the A29

A pre-booked transfer is quoted at about €75 for a sedan, €129 for an MPV and about €156 for a seven-seat minivan. Tolls are included, and the drive takes roughly an hour on the A29/A1 corridor. Child seats can be requested. The price is fixed when you book, so motorway traffic and the hour of arrival do not change it.

A metered taxi from the airport rank over 89 km is expensive. Aggregator estimates range from about €90 to €120 before tolls, and the old taxi tariff still applies because the 2026 reform has been postponed. If you prefer a taxi, ask the driver at the rank for a figure before you get in. For two or more people, the fixed transfer price is usually the better deal.

When the plane lands late

The last metro leaves the airport at around 00:40, and the last urban trains from Campanhã leave at around 23:00 and midnight. A Regional service also ran just after 01:00 on the day we checked. Landing at 22:30 can still work if your bags come out quickly. Landing after midnight usually means staying in Porto and taking a morning train, or booking a car.

Arriving in Aveiro

  • The central canal and the Fonte Nova area are walkable from the station. Taxis wait outside if your hotel is further away.
  • The Costa Nova beach, with its striped wooden houses, is a separate trip of about 15 km towards the coast.
  • Check CP service notices before travelling: a national rail strike is announced for 30 October 2026.
