Here's the joke every Roman eventually clocks: you land at Fiumicino dreaming of the Colosseum, and the sea is sitting right there, barely eight kilometres down the road — closer to your baggage carousel than the historic centre will ever be. While everyone else queues for the train into town, a few of us know better and turn the other way, towards Lido di Ostia, Rome's nearest stretch of sand. It is the sort of shortcut that makes you feel clever for no real reason. Twenty minutes, give or take, and you're smelling salt instead of jet fuel.

Ostia is where Romans go when the city gets too hot to bear and the thought of a proper holiday feels like too much effort. It's a weekender, not a postcard — beach clubs, a long seafront, fried fish, and the extraordinary ruins of Ostia Antica sitting inland like the ancient port town they once were. Getting there from the airport is easy; the only real decision is how much you fancy paying for the privilege of skipping the faff.

The lazy option that just works

If you've been travelling all day and the idea of decoding a bus timetable makes you want to lie down, walk to the official taxi rank outside arrivals and be done with it. It's metered: no fixed fare to Ostia the way there is for the cruise port up the coast, but because the beach is so absurdly close, the meter never has time to do much damage. Figure on somewhere between €25 and €40, which for a door-to-door ride to the seafront is frankly a steal by Roman standards. Cabs run around the clock, so a late flight is no obstacle. Just make sure it's a licensed taxi from the rank; the meter is your friend here, and this is one of those rare runs where it stays cheap because the distance is doing you a favour.

Want the same comfort but without the small suspense of a running meter? A pre-booked private transfer (the likes of Welcome Pickups or Kiwitaxi) does the whole thing for a fixed €30 to €50. A driver tracks your flight and waits if you're late, carries the bag, and drops you at the seafront. You pay a bit more than the taxi for the certainty and the not-having-to-think, which when you're arriving frazzled and short on sleep can be the easiest money you spend. It's the same twenty-minute hop, just arranged in advance.

Doing it on a shoestring

The properly frugal move is the Cotral regional bus, which will get you from the airport towards Ostia for a mere €2 to €4 — pocket-change territory, the sort of fare that makes the taxi feel like an extravagance. The snag, and there's always a catch, is that it takes about forty minutes rather than twenty, and the services are limited through the day. This is not a turn-up-and-hop-on affair. Check the day's schedule before you commit, because missing one can mean a long wait with your luggage for company. Grab it from the airport bus stop, keep your expectations modest, and treat it as the plain budget choice it is. If you're travelling light and in no hurry, it's hard to argue with the maths.

Behind the wheel, if you're staying a while

Should Ostia be a base rather than a day out, or should you have designs on wandering the coast — the big hire desks (Hertz, Avis, Europcar) sit right in the arrivals car-hire centre. Rates swing wildly depending on season and how far ahead you booked, anywhere from about €35 to €90 per day, and the drive itself is the quickest of the lot at roughly fifteen minutes. The plain caveat: Ostia in high summer is heaving, and parking near the good beaches becomes a competitive sport. A car justifies the cost if you're exploring beyond the Lido; for a single lazy beach day it's more hassle than it's worth.

A word to the wise before you go

Don't make the rookie error of racing straight for the sand. Ostia Antica (the ruins of ancient Rome's harbour town) sits between the airport and the modern resort, and it is one of the most underrated archaeological sites anywhere near the capital, blissfully free of the Forum's crowds. Plenty of us treat the whole thing as one outing: ruins in the cooler morning, seafront and fried fish in the afternoon. Ostia the beach town is cheerfully unpretentious, so pack accordingly and don't expect glamour. And a small confession about the sea itself — it won't win any awards for clarity, this being the mouth of the Tiber's neighbourhood. But that's rather the point. Nobody comes to the nearest beach to Fiumicino expecting the Maldives. They come because it's close, it's cheap, and after a flight there's something quietly perfect about having your toes in the sand before the rest of your plane has even reached the city.
