No bus or train links Rome's two airports directly. Public transport means changing at Termini, either between two airport coaches for about €13 or between the Leonardo Express and the Ciampino Airlink for €16.70. Rome's fixed €55 taxi fare covers the whole trip in a single 45-minute drive, the obvious choice when the connection is tight.

Buying tickets in Rome

The Leonardo Express runs nonstop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, for €14. Buy it at Trenitalia machines, the station ticket office or the Trenitalia app, or simply tap a contactless bank card, phone or smartwatch at the fare gate at Fiumicino Aeroporto or Roma Termini. A Mini-groups fare covers four people for €40. If you hold a paper ticket, validate it in the green-and-white platform machine before boarding or you risk a fine; mobile tickets need no validation. Cheaper option: the FL1 regional line (about €8) to Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana and Tiburtina, also validated before boarding.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Rome

The official white taxi is a fixed €55 to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, luggage and up to four passengers included; the car is white with a "Comune di Roma" emblem on the door. Use the signed taxi rank and take the first in line. Ignore the unlicensed "abusivi" who work the arrivals hall and quote €80 to €120. FreeNow and itTaxi book licensed metered cabs; Uber runs only as pricier, limited VTC.

Getting around

Step-free access in Rome

Fiumicino is straightforward: both terminals are step-free throughout, with lifts, escalators and automatic doors, and the airport train boards level.

  • Leonardo Express is step-free from the terminal to the train, with dedicated wheelchair spaces on board. It runs every 15 minutes and reaches Roma Termini in about 32 minutes.
  • At the airport station, the yellow assistance totem on the platform summons staff if you need help boarding; the service is run by RFI.
  • PRM assistance in the terminal is handled by ADR Assistance and is free: meet-and-greet, wheelchair transport through the building, and help at check-in, security and the gate.

Termini itself is busy and long, so if your onward connection is a metro line, allow more time than the map suggests.

Getting from FCO to Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Two airports, no direct link

Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA) are on opposite sides of Rome: Fiumicino by the coast to the south-west, Ciampino on the Via Appia side to the south-east. By road the gap is about 40 km, mostly on the A91 and the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road, which takes around 45 minutes in a car when traffic is moving. There is no scheduled bus or train between the two airports. Every public option goes through Roma Termini, so the realistic choices are two coaches, a train plus a train-and-bus combination, or a taxi on a fixed fare.

Via Termini on coaches

The cheapest combination is a pair of airport coaches. SIT Bus Shuttle charges €7 one way from Fiumicino (Terminal 3, bay 16) to Rome and €6 from Rome to Ciampino, with both services using its Termini stop on Via Marsala outside the Hotel Royal Santina, so the change is on one pavement. That makes €13 in total. RomeAirportBus (Schiaffini) and Terravision run the same two legs on similar terms; RomeAirportBus lists each leg at €8–9 one way. Allow about an hour for Fiumicino–Termini on the road, then around 40 minutes onward to Ciampino, plus the wait between coaches. Coaches are cheaper online and depart to a timetable, not on demand.

Train plus Airlink

If you prefer rails, take the Leonardo Express from the Fiumicino station (linked to the terminals by a walkway) nonstop to Termini for €14, every 15 minutes. At Termini, buy a Trenitalia Ciampino Airlink ticket: a regional train to Ciampino station plus an Atral connecting bus to the airport for €2.70 in total. That gives €16.70 and avoids sitting in ring-road traffic for the first leg, but you walk the length of Termini between platforms and change again at Ciampino station. Trenitalia does not sell the bus part separately.

The €55 fixed taxi

Roma Capitale sets fixed taxi fares for its airports under a 2024 council decision, and Fiumicino to Ciampino airport is one of them: €55 per car, either direction, including luggage and supplements according to a June 2026 summary of the tariff table. Queue for the white Roma Capitale cabs at the marked taxi stand by the arrivals exit and say "Ciampino aeroporto, tariffa fissa" before you set off. Touts inside the arrivals hall offering rides are not licensed taxis. For two or more people with bags and a connection to make, €55 for a direct 45-minute drive compares well with paying two coach fares each.

Booking a car for a tight connection

Private transfer brokers quote this route at about €60–90 for a car. The premium over the fixed taxi buys certainty of pick-up and a vehicle size you choose in advance, which matters for families with car seats or for groups that will not fit in one taxi. It is also useful if you are travelling in the opposite direction from a Ciampino hotel at an hour when taxis are scarce.

Timing your connection

Fiumicino and Ciampino are separate airports, so nothing about a connection between them is protected. Budget for baggage reclaim at Fiumicino, the ride, and check-in and security at Ciampino, where many Ryanair and Wizz Air flights operate. On weekday mornings and evenings the GRA can turn 45 minutes into well over an hour. Most travellers leave at least four to five hours between scheduled landing and onward departure; a self-transfer of under three hours is a gamble whatever mode you choose.

The order of preference for a short gap is simple: taxi first, because it leaves the moment you reach the rank; train plus Airlink second, because the Leonardo Express is not affected by road traffic; coaches last, because two timetables and the ring road all have to cooperate. With a long gap, the coaches are perfectly adequate and save the most money.

Night and curfew

Ciampino's runway is subject to night restrictions, with scheduled flights largely absent between 23:00 and 06:00, and its public transport links wind down in the late evening. If your Fiumicino flight lands late and your Ciampino flight leaves early the next morning, a hotel near Ciampino plus a taxi at the fixed fare is often more sensible than an overnight wait.
