Somewhere over the past two thousand years, a hundred thousand Romans roared as gladiators bled into the sand, and you are about to walk the same travertine arches that held them. From the moment your plane touches down at Fiumicino, roughly 30 kilometres of coast, umbrella pines and suburban sprawl separate you from that first, breath-catching glimpse of the Colosseo rising above the traffic. Get the connection right and you can be standing in the shadow of the arena inside an hour, with your imagination already peopling the tiers with a toga-clad crowd.

Chasing Nero's ghost by rail

The purist's approach, and my unashamed favourite — is the Leonardo Express, the non-stop airport train that fires you straight into the belly of the city at Roma Termini. It costs €14 and runs roughly every 15 minutes, so you rarely wait long on the FCO station platform. There is a satisfying logic to it: no changes, no stops, just a clean run through the campagna while you press your nose to the glass and watch modern Italy blur past on your way to something impossibly ancient.

Termini is not your final destination, though. It is your gateway. From the concourse, follow the signs down to metro Line B, buy a €1.50 city ticket, and ride just two stops to a station with the most gloriously on-the-nose name in the whole network: Colosseo. You climb the stairs, blink in the Roman light, and there it is, filling the sky in front of you. Few arrivals in travel are as theatrical. For roughly €15.50 all in, it is also astonishing value for a front-row seat at the greatest amphitheatre ever built.

When the meter can wait — the fixed-fare cab

Perhaps you have landed with luggage, tired legs, or children who have reached the end of their patience. This is where Rome does something wonderfully civilised. Because the Colosseum and the whole historic centre sit inside the Aurelian walls — the third-century ramparts that still trace the city's ancient edge — the journey qualifies for the city's official fixed airport fare of €55 per car, not per person. Take only the white, licensed taxis from the Comune di Roma rank outside arrivals; ignore anyone who sidles up in the hall offering a ride, however charming their patter.

That fixed price is your shield against the classic tired-tourist overcharge, and it buys you a door-to-door glide of around three-quarters of an hour. For a family of four splitting the cost, it can undercut four separate train-plus-metro tickets while dropping you far closer to your hotel steps — a rare case where the comfortable option is also the shrewd one.

An emperor's welcome, arranged in advance

There is a third path, for those who like the tension of arrival dissolved before it begins: the pre-booked private transfer. Operators such as Welcome Pickups and Kiwitaxi track your flight and have a driver waiting however late you land, and the price is fixed in advance, typically around €45 to €70. You settle into the back seat, someone else wrestles with Rome's magnificently chaotic traffic, and you can spend the ride reading up on the Vestal Virgins instead of squinting at metro maps. It is the closest a mere traveller gets to an emperor's welcome.

Walking into the ancient heart

However you arrive, remember what you have actually come to: not a single monument but a whole sacred quarter. The Colosseo is merely the overture. Behind it spreads the Roman Forum, once the beating civic heart of an empire, and above that climbs the Palatine — the hill where Romulus is said to have founded the city and where emperors later built their palaces. This is where the very word palace was born. The whole ensemble is ringed by the tangled, photogenic lanes of the historic centre, so plan to lose an afternoon on foot; the district rewards aimless wandering more than any checklist ever could.

A word to the wise, born of watching queues snake around the arena in the August heat: book your Colosseum timed entry online before you leave home, and aim for the first slot of the morning or the last of the day, when the light turns the stone honey-gold and the crowds thin. Carry water, wear shoes that respect two millennia of uneven paving, and give yourself permission to simply stand still for a moment. You have crossed a continent and thirty kilometres of Roman suburb for this. Let the weight of it land before you reach for your camera.
