Fifteen kilometres, and the station that was supposed to change everything
Sunshine sits in Melbourne's inner west, closer to the runway than almost anywhere else on this page. Its significance is the railway: three lines meet here โ Sunbury, Ballarat and Bendigo โ which makes it the junction of the whole western network. It is also the station the long-promised Melbourne Airport Rail line was meant to connect to, which is why the suburb appears in every discussion of the project and why the link still does not exist.
For now the connection is a bus, and the point of it is exactly that interchange.
The shortest SkyBus route
The Sunshine Express covers the fifteen kilometres in about twenty to twenty-five minutes, and because the distance is a third of the city run, the fare is proportionally lower โ roughly AUD 14 to 20 rather than the AUD 25.90 charged to Southern Cross.
It picks up at Terminal 1 and Terminal 4 only, not T3. An international arrival at T2 walks along the frontage to the neighbouring building first.
What makes the route useful is not Sunshine itself. It is that from Sunshine station you can reach the western suburbs directly, or board a V/Line service to Ballarat, Bendigo or Geelong without ever going into the middle of Melbourne. For anyone travelling on to regional Victoria, that is a genuine shortcut โ the alternative is a coach into Southern Cross and a walk across to the regional platforms.
The Myki alternative, which is a long way round
You can do it on a standard fare: the 901 SmartBus north to Broadmeadows, then a train around to Sunshine. About fifty minutes and roughly AUD 5.30 plus AUD 6 for the card.
It is cheaper and it is also a peculiar shape โ a large arc north and then west to reach somewhere fifteen kilometres away in a straight line. Worth it if you are on the tightest possible budget or already hold a Myki. Otherwise the express coach does the same job in half the time for a modest fare.
Taxis on a short run
A metered cab is AUD 45 to 60, one of the shortest and cheapest airport runs Tullamarine offers. That figure is close enough to four express coach tickets that a group of three or four should compare the two before queuing at the kerb.
A booked car at AUD 60 to 90 is rarely necessary over this distance. Where it earns its place is timing: Tullamarine handles a lot of very late and very early flights, and the Sunshine Express does not run around the clock. If you land at two in the morning, a fixed-price car arranged in advance beats standing at a closed kerb working out what to do.
What Sunshine is like
It is a working western suburb rather than a destination โ Vietnamese and Sudanese and Maltese in successive layers, with a market, a high street and a lot of building going on around the station in anticipation of infrastructure that has not yet arrived. People stay here because it is cheap and well connected, not because of the view.
That shapes the practical advice: if your booking is in Sunshine, the coach is the sensible choice. If Sunshine is a transfer point on your way to Ballarat or Bendigo, the coach is not merely sensible but faster than any alternative.
The rail project, and why it matters to your planning
It is reasonable to ask whether any of this will change. Melbourne Airport Rail has been designed to run through Sunshine, and construction timelines have moved repeatedly โ long enough that residents treat announcements with scepticism. Nothing about a journey booked today should assume the line exists.
What that means practically: if you read an older guide mentioning an airport train, it was describing a plan rather than a service. Every option on this page, including this one, is a bus or a car, and will be for the foreseeable future.
