Southern Cross is the right terminus for both districts. Docklands begins immediately behind the station and Southbank is over the pedestrian bridge โ roughly ten minutes on foot, or free if you use the City Circle tram, which costs nothing inside the central zone.

Much the same fare as the CBD proper since both districts sit on the edge of it. Southbank's hotel entrances are mostly on the river side rather than the main road, which is worth saying to the driver at the start rather than the end.

Docklands addresses are notoriously hard to find โ the street pattern is new, the towers look alike and several entrances are off internal roads. A driver working from the address rather than the postcode saves a genuine amount of wandering.

Two districts built on industrial land
Southbank and Docklands are both reclaimed ground โ rail yards and working wharves that the city turned into apartments, arts venues and a casino within about thirty years. They sit on opposite sides of the Yarra at the western end of the centre, and both are close enough to Southern Cross that the journey from the airport is really the SkyBus journey plus a walk.
Getting there is the city route
The Melbourne City Express is the right coach: kerbside outside baggage claim at Terminals 1, 3 and 4, about thirty minutes to Southern Cross outside peak and closer to forty-five in it. The fare is around AUD 25.90 and Myki is not accepted โ SkyBus sells its own ticket.
From the station, Docklands starts immediately behind the concourse. Marvel Stadium is a two-minute walk and the harbour apartments a few minutes further. Southbank is over the pedestrian bridge across the Yarra, perhaps ten minutes on foot to the Crown complex and the arts precinct behind it.
If you would rather not walk, the City Circle tram and every tram inside the central grid are free. The free tram zone covers both districts, so the last leg costs nothing at all โ one of the genuinely good deals in Australian public transport.
The cheap way, with a change
The 901 SmartBus to Broadmeadows and then a train to Southern Cross costs about AUD 5.30 on a Myki fare, plus AUD 6 for the card if you need one. It takes a little over an hour against SkyBus's thirty minutes.
The trade is the change. Broadmeadows is a straightforward interchange but it is still a bus, a platform and a train with your luggage. Travelling light it is a fifth of the price for twice the time; with cases, the coach earns its fare.
Why Docklands defeats drivers
A metered cab to either district costs much the same as the CBD proper, AUD 70 to 85, because they sit on its edge. A pre-arranged car runs AUD 85 to 125 with the price settled beforehand.
The case for booking ahead is unusually strong in Docklands specifically. The street pattern is new and was laid out around the water rather than the grid, the towers look interchangeable from the road, and several building entrances are off internal service roads that do not appear on the obvious map. People do circle. In Southbank the equivalent problem is that most hotel entrances face the river promenade rather than the main road, which is worth mentioning to the driver at the start of the journey rather than the end of it.
Parking, and the case against a car
Both districts have a lot of paid parking and virtually no free parking. Rates are among the highest in the country and the apartment buildings that do offer a space charge separately for it.
Set against that, everything here is within walking distance of a major station, the free tram zone covers the whole area, and the city grid beyond is well served by trams that run every few minutes. A hire car collected on arrival will sit in a garage costing forty or fifty dollars a night until the day you actually leave Melbourne โ which is the day to collect it instead.
What is actually within reach on foot
Worth knowing before choosing a hotel here, because the two districts feel similar on a map and are not. Southbank puts you next to the Arts Centre, the National Gallery of Victoria and the riverside restaurant strip, with the city grid a bridge away โ it is the more connected of the two and the walk into the centre is genuinely pleasant.
Docklands is quieter, newer and further from everything except the stadium and the waterfront. On a still summer evening the harbour is lovely; on a windy Tuesday in July it can feel like an empty film set. Neither is wrong, but the SkyBus journey is identical and the difference only shows up once you are standing there.
Cutting to it
SkyBus to Southern Cross and walk, or ride a free tram the last few hundred metres. Take the 901 and a train if you are counting every dollar and travelling light. Book a car if your address is in Docklands and you would rather not watch a driver circle a block three times. And pick the car up on your way out of town, not on your way in.
