The suburbs people fly in for
Box Hill is not on anyone's tourist itinerary and it is one of the best places to eat in Melbourne. A dense cluster of Cantonese, Sichuan, Shanghainese and Malaysian kitchens sits around the station, much of it inside or underneath shopping centres, and a great deal of it better than what you will find in the city for twice the money. Doncaster, a few kilometres north, is quieter and more residential, built along a ridge with a large shopping centre at its centre.
Most people making this journey are visiting family, coming home, or attending something at a university campus. They are also, frequently, the ones who discover that going via the city is a mistake.
The Eastern Express, and why it exists
SkyBus runs a dedicated service out here: airport to Watsonia, then Doncaster, then Box Hill, using the ring road rather than the centre. That saves close to an hour compared with taking the City Express to Southern Cross and coming back out on a suburban train.
It picks up at Terminal 1 and Terminal 4 only. Virgin passengers arriving at T3 and international arrivals at T2 both need to walk along the terminal frontage first โ a couple of minutes, but worth knowing before you stand at the wrong kerb watching buses leave.
Like the other non-city SkyBus routes, this one runs to a timetable rather than continuously. Check the departures against your landing; the gaps can be substantial in the evening.
The Myki route
The 901 SmartBus passes through the eastern suburbs on its long orbital run south, which means Doncaster is reachable on a standard Myki fare of about AUD 5.30. It takes roughly eighty minutes against the express coach's fifty-five, and costs about a fifth as much.
Box Hill has an additional advantage: it is on the suburban rail network. Once you are there, trains reach the city centre directly, so if you are staying near the station you may not need any other transport for the rest of the trip.
Tolls, and what a taxi really costs
A metered cab runs AUD 95 to 120 for the forty-minute trip across the top of the city. The number is higher than the distance suggests because the route uses the M80 ring road and then EastLink, both tolled, and the tolls are folded into your fare.
A pre-booked car at AUD 110 to 150 fixes that before departure. Its real advantage here is the last few kilometres rather than the first thirty: the Eastern Express stops at three points along a corridor, and the eastern suburbs spread well beyond them. If your address is a residential street in Templestowe or Blackburn rather than a stop on the route, the coach solves most of the journey and leaves you the awkward part.
Hiring, and when not to
Parking is easy and mostly free out here, which is a genuine change from anywhere near the centre, and the ring road puts the Yarra Valley within forty minutes. From about AUD 45 a day, a car makes the eastern suburbs behave like the sprawling, low-density place they are.
The counter-argument is specific to Box Hill: it has a train line. If you are staying within walking distance of the station and spending your days in the city, a hire car will cost more in tolls and parking than the Myki fares it replaces. Doncaster, which has no railway at all, is the opposite case.
A note on eating here
Since it is the reason a lot of people come out from the city, it is worth saying where. The concentration is around Box Hill Central and the streets immediately off Whitehorse Road, and the good places are often on the first floor or inside a food court rather than behind a street frontage. Queues form early in the evening and most of the busiest rooms take cash more happily than cards.
Practically, that means if you are arriving hungry after an overnight flight, Box Hill is one of the few destinations on this page where you can eat properly within ten minutes of stepping off the coach.
Which to choose
Take the Eastern Express if the timetable fits โ it is the only service that crosses the city without making you change. Take the 901 if you are counting dollars and have the time. Book a car for a residential address away from the corridor, and hire one if you are staying in Doncaster or heading for the valley.
