Oia sits at the far northern tip of Santorini, which makes it the longest run you can take from the airport and the one arrival that behaves differently from everywhere else on the island. Some hotels send a porter with a trolley if you message ahead; others expect you to manage it yourself. The metered taxi from the rank, and the August evening wait

A taxi from the airport rank is the quick, no-fuss choice, and the meter to Oia usually settles at €35-45, climbing after midnight. The drawback is supply: Santorini runs a famously small fleet of cabs for the whole island, so an evening flight landing in high season can find the rank empty and a queue forming. If you arrive on a summer night with a firm dinner reservation in the village, that uncertainty is real. When a cab does turn up, the ride is straightforward up the north coast, and the driver leaves you where the road gives out to pedestrian lanes — expect to wheel the bags the last few minutes yourself. Two cash tickets and a change at Fira central

There is no single bus to Oia. The KTEL service runs airport to Fira first, and you change there at the central station for a second bus up to Oia. Two separate tickets at €2.20 each come to €4.40, which is as cheap as the island gets. The trade is time and hassle: the airport bus runs roughly hourly from 06:10 to 22:10, the Fira–Oia leg every 30 minutes until 21:00 in the current timetable, and between the ride, the walk across Fira's station and the wait for the connection you should budget an hour or more. It thins out badly late in the evening, so a night arrival can leave you stranded mid-transfer. For backpackers travelling light in daylight it works fine. Dragging honeymoon luggage through two buses and a change, less so, and you still finish on foot in Oia regardless.

A driver who knows exactly where Oia's road runs out

The strongest reason to pre-book a private transfer here is local knowledge of the drop point. On the island's longest cross-island run, a driver who already knows where the tarmac ends and the stepped lanes begin will set you down at the nearest access point to your hotel rather than the generic village edge, shaving that luggage walk to its minimum. You are met on arrival, the fare is fixed at around €47-55 before you fly, and you skip the taxi queue entirely, which on a peak-season evening is worth the premium over the meter. But the same pedestrian rule bites harder for drivers: Oia bans cars from its core, and the public car parks on the approach fill completely before sunset every single evening. Arrive late and you circle for a space, then walk in anyway. If you rent, plan to reach the village well before the crowds build, or park on the outer approach and accept the walk in from there.
