You have carried this image around for years, perhaps without admitting it: the iron lattice rising over the rooftops, the Seine catching the light, that first glimpse of the Eiffel Tower framed by the Trocadéro gardens. Everyone tells you the tower is best met from that terrace across the river, where the fountains fall away and the whole thing stands complete against the sky. They are right. So the only question that matters, stepping bleary-eyed out of arrivals at Charles de Gaulle, is how to close the thirty kilometres between the terminal and that view without losing your nerve or your first evening.

The slow romance of arriving by rail

There is something honest about earning the tower rather than being delivered to it. For a single €14 airport ticket you can ride the whole way in on the RER, and I confess a soft spot for this route precisely because it makes you work a little. You take the RER B out of the airport stations, watching the northern suburbs give way to the grey-gold sprawl of the city, then change at St-Michel–Notre-Dame — a station that empties you out beside the cathedral and the booksellers, which is already almost too much beauty for one journey. From there the RER C carries you to Champ de Mars–Tour Eiffel, or you slip onto the metro and surface at Trocadéro itself.

Trains come every ten to twenty minutes or so, and the run takes roughly fifty-five minutes end to end. It is not the fastest option, and with a suitcase the connection asks a bit of patience, but if you climb those Trocadéro steps at dusk after a train ride, the tower does not feel like a postcard. It feels earned.

When you would rather be carried

Sometimes romance has to bow to reality — a red-eye flight, an aching back, a child asleep on your shoulder. On those days, walk straight to the official taxi rank outside your terminal, where cabs wait around the clock, and let Paris come to you through a window instead. Here is the one fact worth carrying in your head: the fare from CDG into central Paris is fixed, no meter drama, no haggling. But the city is split by the river, and the price splits with it. The Eiffel Tower stands on the Left Bank, so the fixed fare to its feet is €65. The Trocadéro terrace, your dream vantage point, sits on the Right Bank — where the fixed fare is €56.

That €9 is worth a moment's thought, because it lines up neatly with what you actually want. If your heart is set on seeing the tower whole before you stand beneath it, ask for Trocadéro, pay the Right-Bank fare, and let your first sight be the grand one. You can always cross the bridge on foot afterwards, camera in hand.

Booking a driver who already knows your name

If the thought of any decision at all after landing feels like too much, a pre-booked private transfer takes the last uncertainty off the table. Companies such as Welcome Pickups and Blacklane meet you in the arrivals hall and carry you door to door for a fixed price somewhere between €65 and €85 — the same figure whether you land at rush hour or well past midnight. It costs a touch more than the taxi and a good deal more than the train, but there is a particular tenderness in walking out of customs, disoriented and jet-lagged, and finding someone waiting only for you. For couples marking something, or anyone arriving on nerves, it can be the kindest money you spend.

The keys in your own hand

I will be honest — I would not hire a car simply to reach the Eiffel Tower. Parisian traffic and the maze around the Champ de Mars are no way to begin a love affair with the city. But if the tower is only the opening chapter of a longer journey — the Loire, Normandy, the long roads south — then the rental desks of Hertz, Avis and Sixt sit right in arrivals, at roughly €45 to €90 a day depending on the car and the season. Collect the keys, but consider parking the plan and taking the train for tonight.

However you come — rattling in on the RER, gliding across a fixed-fare bridge, or handed gently to the door — hold your first proper look for Trocadéro. Stand at the railing, let the fountains run, and understand at last why you crossed the world for a shape made of iron.
