The train that refuses to go to London

Every other rail option at Gatwick points at the capital. This one turns west instead, runs through Redhill and Guildford, and reaches Reading in about ninety minutes without touching London at all. For anyone heading to the Thames Valley, Oxford, Bath, Bristol or South Wales, that single characteristic is worth more than the journey time suggests.

The alternative is the one most people default to: train into London, cross the city by Underground to Paddington, then a Great Western service out west. It is not obviously slower on paper. It is considerably worse in practice, because it involves hauling luggage across a crowded capital and betting on two connections instead of none.

How the service runs

Great Western operates it directly from the platforms beneath Gatwick's South Terminal, every thirty minutes, taking around an hour and a half. GWR quotes average savings of more than 50% on advance tickets for this route, which is unusually large — booking the day before genuinely halves what you pay. Walk-up fares run to £35 and advance tickets start nearer £14.

There is a seasonal detail too: overnight services run on this line between June and September, which is useful for late summer arrivals who would otherwise be stuck at the airport until morning.

What Reading connects you to

Reading is a junction more than a destination for most people making this trip. From its platforms the Great Western main line runs west to Bath, Bristol and Cardiff, north to Oxford and the Cotswolds, and the Elizabeth line runs east into London if you change your mind. Heathrow is reachable by a short hop and a connection. It is, in short, the point at which the whole of western England opens up without London in the way.

The town itself has a compact centre about ten minutes' walk from the station, the Oracle shopping centre on the river, and a Thames-side stretch that is pleasant in summer. Most Gatwick arrivals are passing through rather than staying, but it is not a bad place to break a journey.

The road version

By car it is the M25 anticlockwise and then the M4, about 80 minutes when the motorway cooperates. Book a firm ahead and the bill is £95 to £140; take the rank outside arrivals and it is £120 to £160. Both are a lot of money for a journey the railway does directly and reliably.

The case for a car is narrow but real: a group of four with luggage, or an address in the Thames Valley that is nowhere near a station — Bracknell's business parks, the villages out towards Henley, the Winnersh and Wokingham sprawl. In those cases the train leaves you with a second journey to solve at the far end, and a car does not. The honest comparison is train plus onward taxi versus one car all the way.

The one Gatwick route where hiring makes sense

This is it. Everywhere else on this page, a hire car runs into the Congestion Charge, the ULEZ, or parking that costs more than the rental. Head west and none of that applies. The M4 corridor, the Cotswolds, Oxford, Bath, the Chilterns and the whole of the West Country are car country, and Gatwick's rental village is a perfectly good place to start.

Desks sit in the arrivals halls with the cars in a village reached by shuttle from either terminal. Rates run from about £30 a day. If the trip involves more than one town, the car pays for itself against a handful of point-to-point rail fares — and unlike central London, there is somewhere to put it at the other end.

Choosing between them

Travelling alone or as a pair to Reading itself, book a GWR advance ticket and take the direct train — it is cheaper than anything else and skips the capital entirely. Travelling as a group, or to an address the railway does not reach, price a car or a transfer against the train plus a local taxi before assuming rail wins. And if you are going further west than Reading, check whether an advance ticket straight through to your final station costs less than two separate legs. On Great Western it often does.
