Gatwick's railway station is not a separate building you have to find. It is underneath the South Terminal, about five minutes from the arrivals hall on the flat, and if you landed at North Terminal you take the free shuttle transit across first — two minutes, runs constantly, no ticket. What confuses people is what happens once they reach the platforms. Four operators use them, two of those go to Victoria, and the difference in price between them is larger than the difference in time.
Gatwick Express is the one the signage pushes hardest. It runs non-stop, twice an hour, from about 05:41 to 23:10, and takes a shade over half an hour. The fare is £24.10 one way, £47.90 for a return that stays valid a month, and booking online takes roughly 10% off. What you are buying is the absence of stops. Nothing else about the train is special.
Southern runs the same rails to the same terminus and calls at East Croydon and Clapham Junction on the way. That adds ten to fifteen minutes. It also takes more than half the fare off — reckon on £9 to £13 depending on how far ahead you book and whether you are travelling at peak. For most arrivals that is the better deal, and contactless works, so you can tap in and stop thinking about it.
Where Victoria actually puts you
Victoria is a mainline terminus with three Underground lines beneath it: Circle, District and Victoria. Buckingham Palace is a ten-minute walk, Westminster and the river about twenty on a decent day. If your hotel is in Belgravia, Pimlico, Mayfair or around St James's, you can often finish the journey on foot. If it is anywhere east of Charing Cross, check the Thameslink alternative before you commit — a direct train to London Bridge or Farringdon may drop you closer than Victoria plus a Tube ride.
When the coach makes more sense than the train
National Express runs to Victoria Coach Station, which is a five-minute walk from the railway station. It takes about an hour and a half against the train's half hour, because it uses the M23 and then grinds through south London. Fares start near £8 and barely move. The honest case for it is timing rather than money: the railway shuts overnight and the coach does not. A landing at two in the morning has one sensible public option and this is it.
Cabs, fixed quotes and the vehicle-class menu
The airport's licensed concession is Airport Cars Gatwick — white Skoda Octavias on the ground floor immediately outside arrivals, plus a signposted Ground Transport Centre at each terminal. Quotes are fixed by vehicle class rather than metered: about £70 for a saloon carrying three, £78 for an estate, £90 executive, £92 for a six-seater. Journey time is 55 minutes on a clear run and comfortably over an hour when the M23 is not clear, which is most weekday afternoons.
Arranging a car online lands in a similar bracket, usually £75 to £110, and the difference is that the figure is agreed before you fly. A slow passport queue or a jammed motorway costs you nothing extra, and the driver is watching the flight number rather than the clock. For two people the train wins on every measure. For four with luggage, a single car lands near the cost of four Gatwick Express tickets and ends at the door instead of a taxi rank outside Victoria.
Two local details that catch people out
The first is the drop-off charge. Since 6 January 2026 the forecourt costs £10 for up to ten minutes, up from £7, with £1 for each further ten minutes. If someone is collecting you, the long-stay car parks with a shuttle are cheaper than idling outside arrivals.
The second is hire cars. Gatwick has a full rental village and it is the wrong tool for this particular journey. Central London means the Congestion Charge on weekdays, the ULEZ every day, and parking that will outrun the hire cost within forty-eight hours. Rent a car at Gatwick if London is one stop on a longer drive; rent nothing if London is the destination.
