Dubai International Airport to Abu Dhabi

There is a particular kind of day that begins in one emirate and ends in another, and the run from Dubai's airport to Abu Dhabi is exactly that: roughly 140 km of motorway, about 90 minutes of it, with the capital's headline sights — the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, the theme parks strung across Yas Island — waiting at the far end. It is not a trip to improvise your way through at 6am with a case in each hand. The distance rewards a little forethought, and the four ways of covering it differ less in where they drop you than in how much of your day and budget they quietly consume.

Weighing the intercity haul before you commit

Treat this as an intercity journey rather than an airport transfer, because that is what it is. Ninety minutes each way is a real chunk of a single day, and the Grand Mosque in particular asks for time — modest dress, a slow walk through those courtyards, and no desire to be watching the clock. If the mosque and the Louvre are the whole point of the visit, the sensible instinct is to protect the middle of the day and spend a little more at the edges to get there cleanly. The two doors that open straight onto the motorway

For a run this long, being met in arrivals is worth an unreasonable amount to your morning. A pre-booked private transfer (the likes of Kiwitaxi or Welcome Pickups) runs from about AED 280 to 480, fixed in advance, with a driver standing in arrivals and the car going straight to your hotel or the mosque gates. You pay a premium over the meter, but you also buy a price that's settled in advance and no haggling at the kerb when you're worn out from the flight. It is the sensible default for the capital.

The airport taxi from the rank outside arrivals does much the same job on the meter: AED 25 to start plus about AED 1.96 per kilometre, roughly AED 300 to 400 with tolls. It is door to door and available around the clock, which suits an early start or a late return. One caveat earns its place here: confirm the price before you set off, as some drivers will want to agree a figure rather than run the meter across the emirate line. Settle that in the first thirty seconds and the rest of the ride is easy.

Doing it cheaply, and what that costs you in time

There is a genuine budget route, and it is cheap: the RTA intercity coach, the E100 or E101, at a flat AED 25 on a Nol card for the whole crossing. The real catch is that it does not leave from the airport. You first take the Dubai Metro Red Line to Ibn Battuta for the E101 (or into Bur Dubai for the E100 from Al Ghubaiba) and pick up the coach there. Since 30 September 2026 there is also an Etihad Rail train, five a day from Al Yalayis next to Jumeirah Golf Estates metro station, but it arrives in Mohammed Bin Zayed City on the mainland, still a taxi ride from central Abu Dhabi. Buses run frequently through the daytime, but the leg itself is nearer two hours than 90 minutes, and with the transfer bolted on the front you are looking at a slow, multi-stage morning. If you're travelling light, unhurried and happy to treat the getting-there as part of the trip, it is unbeatable value. With a mosque visit and a museum both on the list, the maths of a single day starts to strain.

Taking the wheel across the E11

Hiring a car has an obvious appeal for Abu Dhabi, because the capital's sights are spread out — Yas Island alone is a fair drive from the mosque, and a car lets you string them together at your own pace. The desks are right there in arrivals, and rates sit somewhere around AED 100 to 230 a day depending on the vehicle and season. Two things to keep in your head before you take the keys: the E11 motorway carries several tolls — Salik on the Dubai side, Darb once you're into Abu Dhabi, which quietly add to the day, and the parking and navigation at each site are yours to solve. For a day-tripper it can be liberating; for a single set-piece visit it is often more car than the trip needs.

Read the whole thing as a spectrum. At one end, a fixed transfer that hands you the day intact; at the other, an AED 25 coach that asks for your patience instead. For the mosque and the Louvre, the settled end usually makes more sense and let the driver worry about the tolls.
