You have not flown all this way for a scenic bus tour. You have flown for the private beach, the infinity pool that appears to spill into the Gulf, and the moment the lobby doors part and someone offers you a cold towel. Palm Jumeirah sits roughly 35 km from the terminals, about 35 minutes of motorway on a good run, and how you cover that stretch sets the tone for everything that follows.

Straight From the Belt to the Beach Club

Let me be candid before the romance takes over: the sensible luxury here is a taxi. Walk out of arrivals to the airport taxi rank and an RTA metered cab will carry you door to door for about €25–30 — on the meter that reads out at roughly AED 100–120 once the airport surcharge and the Salik motorway tolls are folded in. They run 24/7, on demand, no booking, no ceremony. For an island that trades in indulgence, the truth is that the humble metered taxi is the usual choice, and rightly so. It knows the causeway, it knows your resort's drop-off, and it will not blink when you arrive with a small mountain of matching luggage.

The Salik tolls are worth a word. The Palm is reached by road and those overhead gantries quietly add their fee; a metered cab simply absorbs them into the fare, so the number you pay is the number you saw. No app, no fumbling, no maths under a heat haze.

The Version Where Your Name Is on a Placard

If your idea of holiday begins the instant you clear passport control, pre-book a private transfer and let the airport theatre pass you by. Operators such as Kiwitaxi and Welcome Pickups watch your inbound flight and have a driver ready however late it lands, then deliver you to the resort door for a fixed, agreed price — generally €38–55, settled in advance so nothing is negotiated in the heat. It is the same 35-minute glide as the taxi, only wrapped in certainty: a known car, a known cost, and someone who already knows which of the Palm's resorts you are calling home for the week.

For a first night, or for a late arrival when you have neither the patience nor the phone battery to queue, this is the graceful move. You pay a modest premium over the meter and buy yourself the pleasure of never once wondering whether you are going the right way.

The Scenic Route, and Why I'd Skip It Today

I have a soft spot for Dubai's Metro — gliding, gleaming, air-conditioned to a fault, and astonishingly cheap at around €2.5–3.5 on the Red Line, with trains every 2–7 minutes. But here is the plain wrinkle: there is no metro on the Palm. To reach the island by rail you take the Red Line, change to the tram, then change again onto the Palm Monorail up the trunk, and that monorail is a separate ticket, roughly €3.80 on top. Three modes, two interchanges, and a leisurely hour or so all told.

Do that on a bright afternoon with a day bag and it is a charming ride up the spine of the island, the resorts unspooling on either side. Do it jet-lagged, dragging suitcases up and down platforms and station lifts, and the charm evaporates fast. It is slow with luggage — genuinely, unavoidably slow, and for a guest bound for a private beach, patience is precisely the currency you should not be spending on arrival. Save the monorail for a lazy sightseeing loop mid-holiday, when your only cargo is a swimsuit and sunglasses.

When You'd Rather Hold the Keys

Some guests like the freedom of their own car, and the Palm rewards a driver willing to explore Dubai's coastline beyond the crescent. The familiar desks — Hertz, Sixt, Europcar — sit right in arrivals, with day rates spanning roughly €25–60 depending on the machine you fancy. Factor in the Salik gates you'll cross to reach the island, and remember most resorts here run valet parking, so your car vanishes discreetly the moment you pull up.

It is the right call for a longer stay with plans that wander. For a pure resort week of pool, beach and Atlantis, though, a car mostly sits idle under a valet ticket, and you will wish you had simply taken the taxi and started the holiday sooner.

My advice, delivered from a sun lounger in spirit: take the metered cab or book the transfer, let the causeway do its thing, and be poolside before the ice in your welcome drink has a chance to melt.
