Copenhagen Airport to Helsingør

Helsingør is where Denmark leans closest to Sweden, and where Shakespeare parked a brooding Danish prince without ever setting foot in the place. Kronborg Castle — the Elsinore of Hamlet — stands right on the strait, roughly 46 km north of Copenhagen Airport at the tip of the Øresund. It makes a clean day-trip: you can walk the ramparts, peer across four kilometres of water at Helsingborg, and be back in the city by evening. The headline for planning is simple. For a castle visit, the coastal train is the pick — about 70 minutes and €14–16 — and the little ferry across to Sweden is a bonus you tack on once you arrive. A taxi or a booked car only earns its keep for a group or an odd arrival hour.

The Kystbanen run, and the one change that trips people up

The train leaves from the station directly beneath Terminal 3, so you drop down one level from arrivals and you are on the platform. The Øresund line runs through the airport, which means most departures carry you north without a change at all — you stay in your seat past Copenhagen and up the coast. On the trips that do split, the swap happens at København H or Nørreport, where you step across to the Kystbanen, the coastal line that hugs the shore all the way to Helsingør. Watch the platform screens for "Helsingør" as the destination; that is the one word that matters. Departures run about every 20 minutes from roughly 05:00 to midnight, and the whole ride is 1h05 to 1h15. A single sits near 120 DKK, so €15–16. Kronborg, the harbour, and the ferry berths in one square

What makes the train the obvious tool here is the geography at the far end. Helsingør station is not on the edge of town — it sits beside the castle grounds, and the ferry berths are a two-minute walk from the same platform. So the train drops you inside the whole reason you came. Kronborg is a five-minute stroll along the harbour; the ForSea ferries to Helsingborg leave from berths right there. That crossing is the fun add-on: it runs constantly, takes about 20 minutes each way, and lets you stand in a second country for the price of a coffee before catching the next boat back. You buy the ferry ticket separately at the terminal, not as part of your train fare — it is its own short hop, and no advance booking is needed for foot passengers. Time it so you see the castle first, then cross the water while the light is low over the strait.

When splitting a taxi beats the coastal line

A cab from the rank outside Terminal 3 covers the 46 km in about 50 minutes off-peak, with the meter landing somewhere around 670–890 DKK, so €90–120. That is a steep multiple of the train, and for one or two people it is hard to justify for a sightseeing day. The maths shifts with numbers: divided among four, the per-head cost stops looking absurd, and you skip the platform change entirely. The clearer case for a cab is timing rather than comfort — a very early museum slot, a late flight in when the coastal line is thinning out, or luggage you would rather not haul up and down station stairs. For a pre-agreed price with none of the meter anxiety, a private transfer booked ahead runs €95–130: a driver waits in Terminal 3 arrivals and takes you in one ride straight to a Helsingør or north-coast address, which suits a family landing together or anyone heading to a hotel out past the town.

Driving the Danish Riviera instead of going straight there

Renting turns the journey itself into the point. The desks — Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt — sit in Terminal 3 arrivals, and a car runs €40–75 a day depending on class and season. The reason to bother is the coast road north, the stretch marketed as the "Danish Riviera": you can string together the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art at Humlebæk, the old fishing villages, and a beach or two before Kronborg comes into view. Parking in Helsingør is straightforward, a genuine relief compared with hunting for a space in central Copenhagen. Skip the car if the castle is your only target — the train wins on cost and lands you closer. Take it if the day is really about the drive and the museum, with Hamlet's ramparts as the finale.

Book Kronborg's timed entry before you go, catch a "Helsingør" train from under Terminal 3, and leave an hour spare at the end for the Sweden ferry — that one short crossing is the part people remember.
