Vesterbro is the district that sits directly west of Copenhagen Central Station — København H to locals — so if you're basing yourself among the Kødbyen bars, the Istedgade cafés and the design shops in the old Meatpacking blocks, you've picked one of the few Copenhagen addresses where the airport train beats the Metro outright. That's the fact worth holding onto before you reach the platforms. Almost everywhere else in the city, the M2 Metro is the reflex answer. For Vesterbro it isn't, and the reason is simple geography: the trains from the airport terminate at Central Station, and Central Station is your front door.

Why the platform at København H puts you ahead of the Metro

The airport has its own station beneath Terminal 3 — take the escalators down past baggage claim and you're on it. From there the DSB and Øresundståg regional trains run to København H in about 13 minutes, on a flat 36 DKK fare, roughly €5. They leave every ten minutes or so, from around 05:00 until half past midnight. When you step off, you're already on Vesterbro's eastern edge: cross the road behind the station and Istedgade begins. Compare that to the M2 Metro, which also costs about €5 and runs from the 'Lufthavnen' stop above Terminal 3, but skirts the northern side of the district and drops you at Rådhuspladsen — a fair walk in, or a change onto a bus, and about 22 minutes all told. The Metro is the more famous line and it's a fine machine, but here it drops you further from your bed than the train does. This is the one Copenhagen run where the boring old regional train is the sharp move.

Reading the walk from Central Station into Kødbyen

Where you get off depends on which slice of Vesterbro you're staying in. If your flat is up near Istedgade or the streets around Enghave, the eastern exit of København H drops you within a few minutes on foot. If you're aimed at the Meatpacking District itself — the white and brown Kødbyen halls where the wine bars and galleries have moved into the old butchers' units — it's a slightly longer stroll south down Halmtorvet, maybe eight to ten minutes with a bag. The Carlsberg City District, further west past the old brewery gates, is the one corner where you might prefer to stay on the train one more stop to Enghave Plads or hop a local bus, since it's a genuine walk from the main station. None of this is hard; Vesterbro is flat and walkable, and the streets run on a clear grid. It's just worth knowing your exit before you drag a suitcase across the concourse.

The all-night M2, and the taxi that earns its fare late

The train's one weakness is its clock. Once you're past roughly 00:30, it stops, and that's exactly when a night out in Kødbyen tends to end. This is where the Metro flips from second-best to genuinely useful: the M2 runs 24 hours, every four to six minutes even in the small hours, so a late landing or a very early departure is covered when the trains aren't. Take it to Rådhuspladsen and walk the last stretch. If you'd rather not walk at all with luggage, the taxi rank sits outside Terminal 3 arrivals — Dantaxi, 4x27 and Taxa work it — and a run to a Vesterbro address is usually 250 to 350 DKK, somewhere around €34 to €47, and about 22 minutes outside the rush. That's the call to make when you're carrying gear to a Kødbyen flat at one in the morning and the platforms have gone quiet.

When a driver to the doorstep makes the stairs someone else's problem

Plenty of Vesterbro stays are top-floor apartments in handsome old blocks with no lift, and the walk from the station involves stairs of its own. A pre-booked private transfer answers that specific problem: the driver meets you inside Terminal 3, carries the bags, and delivers you to the actual street door rather than the nearest station exit. You agree the price up front — figure on €45 to €60 — so there's no meter anxiety and no fumbling with a ticket machine in a language you don't read. For a family, or for anyone landing with cases who's booked a fourth-floor walk-up, that door-step drop-off is the point. For a solo traveller with a backpack, the train remains hard to argue with.

So the short version: take the 13-minute train to København H by default, keep the M2 in your pocket for after midnight, and book a car only if the stairs or the luggage tip the balance.
