Twenty-nine kilometres east, and a bus nerd's favourite airport run

Let me be upfront about my bias: the trip from LAX to Downtown LA and Union Station is roughly 29 km due east, the drive nominally clocks in around 45 minutes, and I will happily wait an extra ten for a bus that costs a tenth of a cab. Downtown is the city's rail spine — Union Station itself, plus Grand Central Market, the Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Arts District all within a short hop — so it is fitting that the smartest ways in are the ones that lean on wheels-other-than-yours. The good news for anyone counting euros: this particular corridor happens to have the single best budget airport link in the whole of Los Angeles.

The FlyAway, or why I never bother with a car here

The LAX FlyAway to Union Station is the reason I grin when I land at this airport. It costs about €11.70 one-way, runs every 15 minutes from roughly 05:00 to 23:00, and — the part I love — you catch it on the Lower/Arrivals level right outside your own terminal. No shuttle to a distant lot, no lugging bags across a bridge; just walk out to the kerb and look for the green FlyAway signs. It runs non-stop to Patsaouras Plaza at Union Station East, there's free WiFi on board, and because it's a flat fare it doesn't care whether the 105 is crawling or clear. For a solo traveller or a couple heading to a Downtown hotel near a rail line, nothing else comes close on value. My one honest caveat: it drops you at Union Station, not your front door, so if your bed is a fifteen-minute walk away with a heavy case, factor in a short onward hop.

The flat-fare taxi: a rare, honest deal from LAX

Here's a thing most people don't realise — the authorized LAX taxis charge a flat rate of about €54 (that's roughly US$54.50 plus the $4 airport surcharge) into the Downtown zone, the area bounded by Alameda Street, the 10, the 110 and Chinatown. As a flat-fare obsessive I approve deeply: it means a grinding traffic jam on the way in costs you nothing extra, which for once flips the usual airport-taxi anxiety on its head. You pick these up at the LAX-it lot near Terminal 1, reached by the free LAX-it shuttle from every terminal, and they run 24/7. Split three or four ways it's genuinely reasonable — call it €13-18 a head — and door-to-door with all your bags after a red-eye, that predictability is worth a lot. Do confirm your destination sits inside the flat-rate zone; a hotel just outside it may tip you back onto the meter.

Rail for the price of a coffee (if you're patient)

For the true budget purist, Metro is unbeatable at about €1.60 flat, with free transfers for two hours. You ride the free Metro Connector Shuttle from Arrivals to the new LAX/Metro Transit Center, then take the K/C Line and transfer toward the E Line into Downtown. It's around 75 minutes and usually one or two changes, so I'll be straight with you: it's slow, and hauling a big suitcase up and down platforms is no joy. But if you're travelling light and time-rich, paying €1.60 to reach Downtown feels almost cheeky. It should only get smoother as the Automated People Mover phases in through 2026 and eventually replaces that connector shuttle with a direct train to the terminals.

When a fixed private car holds up

Sometimes convenience wins, and that's fine. A pre-booked private transfer (Welcome Pickups and local firms) runs roughly €60-100 — one car for the whole group and its bags, a fixed fare agreed up front and a driver who tracks your flight — genuinely useful for a late-night landing, a group with a mountain of luggage, or a specific Downtown hotel you'd rather not navigate to. And if your trip is really a wider California road trip, the ConRAC rental centre (Hertz, Avis, Enterprise) is reached by a free shuttle from Arrivals, at about €40-90 a day; just know that Downtown traffic and parking fees are steep enough that a car for a pure city stay is more burden than blessing.

Solo or as a pair with manageable bags, take the FlyAway — about €11.70, kerbside at your terminal, straight to Union Station, no contest. Travelling as a group of three or four, or arriving late with everyone's suitcases, the flat ~€54 taxi from LAX-it splits down to a fair price and drops you at the door. Save the €1.60 Metro for light-packing days when you've time to spare, and reserve the private car for that bleary-eyed midnight arrival when certainty beats saving a few euros. Treat every duration as a loose '~' — LA traffic writes its own timetable — but on value, this is the one LAX route where the cheap option is also the smart one.
