Some cities grow like weeds; Putrajaya was drafted. It is Malaysia's planned federal administrative capital, and if you have any affection for boulevards laid out with a ruler, for domes reflected in still water, or for bridges built to be photographed as much as crossed, you will feel the pull the moment you land. The good news for an admirer of civic architecture is geography: at roughly 25 km, Putrajaya is the closest major destination to KUL, and the airport was built on the same swathe of reclaimed land and greenfield south of Kuala Lumpur. You are practically neighbours with the pink Putra Mosque before you have found the baggage carousel. What follows is how to close that short gap, and which method suits which kind of traveller, priced in euros with the usual caveat that fares drift.

The train that most people board wrong

Here is the single most useful thing to know before you reach the platform. Down at the ERL station on Level 1 of KLIA T1 (or Level 1 at klia2) two trains share the same track, and they are not interchangeable. You want the KLIA Transit, the one that actually stops at intermediate stations — not the non-stop KLIA Ekspres that blows straight through to the city. Board the Transit and Putrajaya & Cyberjaya station arrives in about four minutes flat; the airport is truly that near. Fares run around RM9.40, roughly €2, which for a whisper-quiet, climate-controlled ride past the region's manicured edges is close to theft. Trains come about every 30 minutes across a long day, roughly 05:00 to midnight, so unless you have landed in the small hours it is rarely a long wait. The one honest asterisk: the station drops you at Putrajaya Sentral, the transport interchange, not amid the monuments themselves. The administrative core is deliberately spread across wide, low-density boulevards — beautiful to behold, less beautiful to cross with a suitcase, so from Sentral you finish the job with a local Nadi Putra bus or a short Grab into the government precinct or your hotel. Budget a couple of extra euros and a little patience for that last leg.

Grab: the ride that suits the short hop

Because Putrajaya sits so close, ride-hailing here is one of the better bargains at KUL. A Grab summoned through the app from the e-hailing pickup zone, Level 1 at KLIA T1 or Level 1 at klia2, should land you roughly €8 to €14 (about RM40 to 70) and set you down directly at the mosque steps or your lobby, no interchange, no bus, no dragging luggage down a lakeside promenade. For two or three people splitting the fare it becomes almost silly not to take it; solo it is still comfortably affordable. This is my quiet favourite for anyone arriving tired, or arriving in love with the idea of pulling up beside the Perdana Putra rather than approaching it sideways from a transport hub.

The coupon taxi, and why it costs more than the map suggests

The old-school option is the Airport Limo coupon taxi, arranged at the counter in the arrivals hall (Level 3 at KLIA T1, Level 2 at klia2). It is fixed, fuss-free, and door-to-door, but be ready for the arithmetic to feel off. Expect somewhere around €14 to €20 (roughly RM70 to 100), which is noticeably steeper than a Grab covering the same short distance. The reason is administrative rather than geographic: Putrajaya counts as a separate fare zone from KL city, so you pay a flat zone rate that pays little heed to how few kilometres you actually travel. Worth it if you would rather not fiddle with an app or wait for a driver to accept; otherwise the ride-hail wins on value.

Private transfer: for luggage, for groups, for arriving unhurried

If you are travelling with family, real luggage, or simply a distaste for improvisation when you land weary, a pre-booked private transfer is the frictionless choice. Local KL firms and services such as Welcome Pickups take the whole family and its luggage (child seat on request) track your flight so a delay does not strand you, and carry you straight to the door for a fixed fare of about €18 to €28 (around RM90 to 140). Given how the sights are scattered across those grand, spread-out avenues, having a car deposit you exactly where you want to begin is a genuine comfort, and split across a group the per-head cost closes on the taxi anyway.
