Buying tickets in İstanbul
At Istanbul Airport go down to the public-transport floor (level -2) and buy an İstanbulkart from the yellow Biletmatik machines. The machine charges a one-off card fee (shown on screen; it has risen with the 2026 fare increases) and anything you pay above it loads as credit, so you can ride straight away. Tap it on the M11 metro to Gayrettepe (a distance-based fare, 37.40–73.19 TL full fare since July 2026) or on Havaist shuttle buses (470 TL to Taksim or Sultanahmet, 515 TL to Kadıköy). One card works for the whole family by tapping per person. The machines take cash and contactless cards; Havaist coaches also accept bank cards on board.
Taxi scams & safety in İstanbul
The airport is far from the centre, so taxi overcharging is the big issue. Use the official taxi queue outside arrivals, check the meter starts on the day tariff, and be wary of drivers who say the meter is broken, quote a huge flat rate, or take a long detour. Refuse touts inside the terminal offering a private car. Uber and BiTaksi work here but dispatch licensed yellow/turquoise taxis. The M11 metro avoids all of this and is unaffected by traffic.
Step-free access in İstanbul

- Station lifts are easiest to reach from the main station halls rather than the side entrances, so head for the main hall with a wheelchair or pushchair.
- HAVAIST coaches operate accessible midibuses, but they must be requested ahead: at least 1 hour in advance for airport-to-city, and 6 hours in advance for city-to-airport, through HAVAIST's contact channels or the counters on the transport floor.

Getting from IST to Kadıköy
Here's the thing nobody at the airport information desk will tell you: the best part of İstanbul isn't the part you flew in to see. Skip the postcard queues on the European side and point yourself at Kadıköy, the Asian-side neighbourhood where the locals actually eat, drink and loiter. It's all fish markets, record shops, backstreet meyhanes and cafés where nobody's trying to sell you a carpet. The snag, and it's a real one — is that you've landed roughly 50 km away, on the wrong continent entirely. Getting to us means crossing the whole sprawl of the city and then the Bosphorus itself. Worth it. But go in with a plan.
Why the trek is longer than you think
İstanbul Airport sits up in the far north-west, and Kadıköy is down on the Asian shore, so every route has to traverse the city and then slip across (or under) the water. On a good run you're looking at around 55 minutes to 70 minutes; on a bad one, well over an hour and a half. There's no clever shortcut, no secret express that dumps you at our ferry pier. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. What you're really choosing between is comfort, cost and how much faff you can stomach after a flight. Let me be honest about each.
The lazy option, and why I don't judge you for it
If you're jet-lagged, hauling a big case, or simply cannot face working out which platform is which in a language you don't read, book a private transfer. But it's a fixed price, which on a long cross-Bosphorus haul to the Asian side is really good value against the alternative below.
That alternative being the yellow metered taxi from the official rank at arrivals. It's the same 24/7 convenience, similar time (around 75 minutes), but it's the priciest of the popular routes — think €62–71, roughly 2,800–3,200 TL once the bridge tolls are stacked on. For a set fare and no meter anxiety, the pre-booked transfer usually wins. I'd only flag down a taxi if everything else has stopped for the night.
Doing it properly (and cheaply) on the rails
Now for the route worth taking, and the one any curious traveller should consider: the metro-plus-Marmaray combo. It's gloriously cheap, around €1.5–2 for the whole thing, and it's a proper little tour of the city. From the transport level (that's floor −2, Exit 11) you catch the M11 to Gayrettepe, change to the M2 and ride it down to Yenikapı, then hop on Marmaray, which runs in a tunnel beneath the Bosphorus — you cross continents underwater without even noticing, and pop up at Söğütlüçeşme, right on Kadıköy's doorstep.
Two changes, roughly 70 minutes, trains every 8–10 minutes. A few honest caveats:
- Grab an İstanbulkart from a machine before you tap in — one card covers every leg and it's the only sensible way to ride.
- Service runs roughly 06:00 to 00:40, so it is not a 24-hour option. Land at 3am and this plan's off the table.
- You'll be lugging your bags through two interchanges. Fine if you pack light and clever; grim if you've overpacked.
The middle road: the airport coach
Somewhere between splashing out and schlepping your suitcase up and down escalators sits the HavaİST İST-14 coach, which you'll find at the coach stand on floor −2. It's a flat fare of about €10.4 (roughly 468 TL), pay by card or İstanbulkart only: no cash, and it runs 24/7, roughly hourly. The trade-off is time: it crosses over the Bosphorus bridge rather than under it, and at around 110 minutes it's the slowest of the lot, hostage to İstanbul's legendary traffic. Still, it's one seat, no changes, and it runs through the night when the trains have clocked off, which is exactly when you'll be grateful for it.
One last option if you fancy your independence: car hire.
