Buying tickets in Hong Kong
The simplest option is an Octopus card, a tap-to-pay card for the Airport Express, MTR, buses and shops; buy one at the airport (standard or a Tourist Octopus), or use Octopus on your phone. For the Airport Express itself you can also buy a Single or Smart ticket, or just tap a contactless Visa/Mastercard at the gate ("Ride First, Pay Later" charges the fare afterwards). If you plan several MTR days, the Airport Express Travel Pass bundles one or two Airport Express trips with three days of unlimited MTR.
Taxi scams & safety in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is low-scam for transport. The Airport Express and buses are fixed-fare, and red/green taxis at the official rank run on meter with a posted toll and luggage surcharge, so insist on the meter. Uber operates here for upfront pricing. Decline anyone inside the terminal offering a private car or a "cheaper" ride; use the marked taxi queue or Airport Express only, and confirm your red (urban) versus green (New Territories) taxi matches your destination.

The Airport Express is accessible and quick, with one detail worth knowing about the platform edge.
- Airport Express reaches central Hong Kong in about 24 minutes, and every train has a designated wheelchair space. The station and service are wheelchair accessible.
- Carriages sit level with the platform, but there is a small gap that can catch some wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Station staff will bring a ramp to bridge it โ ask rather than attempt it.
- Hong Kong International has full special-needs facilities in the terminal, including mobility assistance on request.
Getting from HKG to Mong Kok
Mong Kok is where you come to spend as little as possible and see as much as you can โ the Ladies' Market stalls, the sneaker shops stacked three deep, goldfish and flower streets, and neon reflecting off wet pavement past midnight. It is the densest neighbourhood on earth, and the cheap guesthouses tucked above the shops are the whole reason to base yourself here. So it would be a shame to blow the day's budget on the ride in from the airport. The good news for a market-hunter: on this particular run, the cheap bus is not the compromise option. It is the smart one. The A21 coach threads straight up Nathan Road and sets you down among the stalls for the price of a bowl of noodles, while the flashier Airport Express costs three times as much and still leaves you with a change to make.

The Cityflyer A21 is the ride you want. It costs HK$34.6, roughly โฌ4, and it is a single, no-transfer fare from the airport to the middle of Mong Kok. You catch it at the A21 stand in the Ground Transportation Centre, one level under Arrivals, and it runs every 10 to 20 minutes from around 06:00 to midnight. The route matters as much as the price: it comes off Lantau, crosses into Kowloon, and then grinds up Nathan Road itself, so the stops read like a tour of where you actually want to be. Allow about 55 minutes. It is slower than the train when the roads clog, but you step off within a couple of blocks of the Ladies' Market rather than at a station on the far side of Kowloon. For anyone travelling light and counting dollars, nothing else here comes close on value.
Airport Express plus a change: faster clock, worse value
The MTR route looks tempting on paper because it is quick, around 40 minutes door to platform. You ride the Airport Express to Kowloon Station for HK$105 (about โฌ12), then either hop the MTR onward via Lai King or grab a short taxi across to Mong Kok for roughly HK$6. It is actually faster than the coach when the roads are jammed, and if you are chasing a dinner reservation that might tip the decision. But look at what you are paying for: three times the A21 fare, plus dragging your bags up and down between the Airport Express and a second line, or paying that extra taxi hop, to reach a spot the bus would have delivered you to directly. For a budget stay in a Mong Kok guesthouse, the maths rarely favours it.
When a red taxi earns its tolls
A cab makes sense in a narrow set of cases: late arrivals after the A21 has stopped, two or three people splitting the fare, or a pile of shopping suitcases you would rather not wrestle onto a coach. Reach for the red urban taxi rank outside Arrivals โ Mong Kok is Kowloon, so the red fleet is the one that can take you, not the blue Lantau cabs. The meter plus tolls lands somewhere around HK$260 to 330, call it โฌ30 to 38, for a trip of about 45 minutes. As Hong Kong taxi runs go this is one of the cheaper ones, because it stays on the Kowloon side and never crosses to the island. Split three ways it is not far off what three Airport Express tickets would cost, and it drops you at the guesthouse door.
Booking a car when the shopping bags win
If you are landing loaded with cases, or you have done the market circuit before and know exactly how much you plan to carry back โ a pre-booked transfer takes the guesswork out. The pull here is a fixed price agreed before you fly, no meter anxiety, and a driver who knows which Mong Kok side street to slip down when Nathan Road is gridlocked, which it often is. Welcome Pickups and Klook both run this route; the driver meets you in the Arrivals Hall, and you can add a child seat at booking, handy if you are steering a family through the crowds. Allow roughly HK$480 to 650 with tolls, in the โฌ55 to 75 band. It is comfortably the dearest option, so it is one you choose for the certainty and the door-to-door service, not to save money.
Weigh it up by what you are optimising for. Watching every dollar and travelling light: the A21, every time, and you will be haggling at the Ladies' Market within the hour. Racing the clock past heavy traffic: the Airport Express and a quick change. Late, laden, or splitting with friends: the red taxi. Wanting a fixed fare and a waiting driver: the pre-booked car. Note the coach's last departure before you land โ miss it, and the taxi rank becomes your budget option by default.
