Buying tickets in Ho Chi Minh City
From Tan Son Nhat, two public buses reach central Ho Chi Minh City. Bus 109 runs to 23/9 Park by Ben Thanh Market for about 15,000 VND, roughly every 40-45 minutes from around 05:30 to 22:00, with luggage racks. The slower local Bus 152 costs about 5,000 VND. Both take cash only — pay the conductor onboard or at the airport booth, and keep small notes handy as change for large bills is limited.

With a street taxi, insist the meter is running or agree the full fare first, and stick to reputable firms like Vinasun or Mai Linh rather than a lookalike cab with a similar name and logo. The easiest way to avoid haggling is a fixed-price app — Grab, Xanh SM or Be — expect roughly 110,000-250,000 VND to District 1. Book in the app, then follow the signs to the "Parking Lot Area" or designated ride-hailing pickup, not a tout's car.
Getting from SGN to Thao Dien (District 2)
If you are moving into Thao Dien for a few months or a few years, the trip from Tan Son Nhat is short on the map and longer than it looks on the clock. The neighbourhood sits about 11 km east of the airport in Thu Duc City, the former District 2, on the far bank of the Saigon River. This is the riverside pocket that long-stay foreigners gravitate to: gated apartment compounds backing onto the water, international schools, Western delis and coffee roasters, and the run of restaurants and craft-beer bars along Xuan Thuy. Getting there means crossing the river and threading the Nguyen Huu Canh corridor, so the 30 to 45 minutes you should budget swings mostly on the time of day. Grab is what almost everyone reaches for, and for good reason.

Ride-hail is the path of least resistance for a Thao Dien arrival. Open Grab, Be or Xanh SM once you have your bags, order the car, and walk to the ground-floor ride-hail lanes marked D1-D2, then match the pillar number the app texts you. Fares land at roughly 150,000 to 210,000 VND, which is about 6 to 8 euros for the whole car rather than per head. The catch is the geography: because Thao Dien is on the eastern side of the Saigon River, your driver has to take either the toll tunnel or a bridge, and both funnel through some of the city's tightest pinch points. In free-flowing conditions it is a 35-minute run. Hit it at 5.30pm on a weekday and the same distance can stretch well past the hour while you crawl along Nguyen Huu Canh. If you can, time your flight to land outside the morning and evening peaks and the crossing barely registers.
The Metro reaches Thao Dien, but not from SGN
You may have read that Metro Line 1 now stops in Thao Dien, and it does — the raised stations along the corridor have changed how residents move around Thu Duc City. It will not help you here, though. The line runs between the central Ben Thanh area and Suoi Tien in the east; it does not touch Tan Son Nhat, and there is no rail link out of the airport at all. So the metro is a tool for later, once you are settled and hopping into District 1 for the evening, not for the ride in from your flight. Trying to stitch together a bus to a metro station with two suitcases makes a simple journey needlessly hard, which is exactly why locals skip public transport for this route.
Metered taxis and the extra kilometres east
A metered cab is the sensible fallback if the apps are surging or your phone is out of data. Head to the official rank outside arrivals and take a Vinasun or a Mai Linh — those two are the reputable meters — and wave off any unbranded driver quoting a round-number flat fare, which is the standard airport hustle. Expect the meter plus airport fee to read somewhere around 200,000 to 280,000 VND, call it 7 to 10 euros. That runs a shade higher than the same firms charge into District 1, purely because Thao Dien is those extra kilometres east and across the water. It is a fair price for a known quantity, and there is no app account to set up if you have just landed and haven't sorted a local SIM.
A driver who knows the compound gates
Booking a private transfer ahead makes the most sense when your building is one of the gated riverside compounds off the main strip — think the Masteri, Estella or the villa lanes near the water, where the entrance is nowhere near where a dropped pin suggests. With Welcome Pickups or a local Saigon firm, a driver meets you past the arrivals gate, handles the bags, and takes you straight to the correct barrier rather than leaving you to redirect a confused Grab in broken directions. What you are buying is a driver who already knows which side lane your compound gate opens onto, which matters more in Thao Dien's maze of interior streets than almost anywhere else in the city.
For most people arriving to settle in, the answer is simply Grab: cheap, door to door, and off your phone in seconds. Save the metered taxi for a dead app and the pre-booked transfer for a late touchdown or a hard-to-find riverside address. Whichever you pick, look at your landing time first — the river crossing, not the distance, is what decides whether this is a half-hour trip or an hour of Nguyen Huu Canh traffic.
