Cancún International Airport to Puerto Morelos

Of all the stops strung along the Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos is the one you can reach before your legs go stiff. It sits about 30 km south of Cancún airport, a run that takes roughly half an hour, which makes it the closest quiet town to the terminal and a natural halfway marker between the airport and Playa del Carmen. This is a working fishing village with a leaning lighthouse, a reef a few hundred metres offshore that draws snorkellers, and a square where nothing moves quickly. What you give up is that no long-distance coach turns off the highway to drop you in it, so the choice is really about how much of that short distance you want to spend sorting out the last two kilometres.

Thirty kilometres, and why the last two decide everything

The village is small enough that the main question is not how far you're going but where exactly you end up. Puerto Morelos divides into two halves that share a name and little else: the beach side down by the water, with the square, the lighthouse and most of the guesthouses, and an inland Colonia set back near the highway, where prices drop and the sea is a bike ride away. A driver who knows the difference will take you to the right one. A driver who doesn't may leave you on the wrong side of Federal Highway 307 with your bags. Whatever you book, name your street or hotel, not just "Puerto Morelos".

The shared van most people actually take

Because there's no direct coach and no Uber waiting at the terminal, a shared shuttle is the sensible middle option here and the one that fits a slow-town trip. You book a seat at the shuttle counter in arrivals, the van pools you with others heading the same way, and it leaves once it fills rather than on a clock, so allow a little slack. The trip runs about 45 minutes with the pooling, and the fare sits somewhere around €15-22 a person, dropped at your hotel or the square. For a couple travelling light to a village where you'll walk everywhere anyway, it's hard to beat on value.

Operators like eTransfers, Welcome Pickups and local van companies meet you inside arrivals and take you straight to a private vehicle, no pooling and no filling-up wait, and the door-to-door run is the same 30 minutes as a taxi. Since there's no ride-hailing app at this airport, the pre-booked van is the version where an actual named driver stands in arrivals for you rather than a phone that may never find a match, which matters more than usual for a village where taxis thin out fast. Expect €40-55 for the car, split however many of you there are.

The official airport taxi covers the same ground on a fixed zone fare, around €40-60, bought as a ticket at the counter inside arrivals. It's quick and there's no booking ahead. The one thing to know is that the trip back out of a sleepy Puerto Morelos is harder than the trip in, so ask your hotel to line up the return rather than assuming a cab will be idling by the square.

The crucero run for the tightest budget

There is a way in for loose change, and it leans on the fact that the highway does pass the village even if the coaches don't stop for it. Board a Playa-bound ADO coach at the airport and ask the driver to let you off at the Puerto Morelos crucero, the highway junction. From that crossing the village lies about 2 km east, covered by a colectivo van or a short taxi that finishes the job. All in, it comes to something like €8-12, and it takes around 55 minutes once you count the hand-off. It's fiddly with big suitcases and involves standing at a roadside crossing, so it rewards light packers and anyone who treats the arrival as part of the trip rather than an obstacle to it.

The short version: the drive itself is quick and cheap no matter what, so pick by how you like to land. Take the shared van for value, the private transfer for a driver who's already there, the taxi for go-now simplicity, and the ADO-plus-colectivo for the lowest fare on the Riviera Maya. Then tell whoever's driving whether you want the lighthouse or the Colonia, and you're in the square by the time your bags stop feeling heavy.
