Athens International Airport to Acropolis & Koukaki

There is a moment, somewhere on the road in from the airport, when the Sacred Rock first shows itself above the rooftops — the Parthenon standing pale and unbothered against the Attic sky, its marble catching a light that has not changed since Pericles walked beneath it. You have come thirty-five kilometres to stand under those columns, and the last stretch of the journey deserves a little forethought, because the citadel keeps its closest lodgings in Koukaki and Makrygianni, the quiet streets that slope up towards the crag, and how you arrive there sets the tone for everything after.

Following the Rails to the Foot of the Rock

The pilgrim on a budget should take the metro, and take it gladly. Down on the same concourse as arrivals, Line 3 waits to carry you into the heart of the old city, a single €9 ticket in hand covering the whole passage door to platform. The one small rite of the journey is a change: Line 3 does not run all the way to the Acropolis, so you alight at Syntagma, or Monastiraki, if you prefer, and cross onto the red Line 2 for the short hop to the station named, plainly and beautifully, Acropoli. Trains come roughly every thirty to forty minutes, and the whole passage takes around fifty. Emerge at Acropoli and the Sacred Rock is simply there, framed at the top of the street, and your hotel is likely no more than a few minutes' walk through Koukaki's lanes. Keep that single ticket safe; it is your one companion for the change.

A word for the faithful with heavy cases: the metro is glorious value but it is not delivered to your door, and Koukaki's gentle inclines can feel less gentle when you are dragging a fortnight of luggage up them. Weigh the saving against the sweat.

The Chariot That Comes to Your Threshold

When the hour is late, or the luggage is heavy, or you simply wish to watch the city arrive through a window rather than navigate it, the Athens taxi is a mercy. The licensed cabs wait at the rank by Arrivals Exit 3, and, this is the blessing every traveller should know — the fare into the centre is fixed, not metered against the traffic. Plan for €40 by day and €55 after midnight, a flat tariff carried right to the door of your Koukaki hotel in about three-quarters of an hour. No fumbling for the right coins, no walk up the hill; the driver deposits you beneath the citadel and the columns are your first sight when you step out. For a family, or for anyone arriving weary on a night flight, it is money honestly spent.

The Long Coastal Road for the Unhurried

Should you wish to trade time for a handful of euros, and to feel the journey rather than sleep through it — the OASA Airport Express bus, the X95, rumbles in from the arrivals stops for a flat €5.50, day or night, roughly every fifteen to thirty minutes. It sets you down at Syntagma, the great square at the city's heart, after something like an hour and a quarter. From there it is a fifteen-minute walk towards the Rock, or a single metro stop if your feet have already given their all. It is the slowest road by some margin, and the least suited to luggage, but there is an old pleasure in rolling into the ancient city overland, watching Athens gather around you street by street.

A Driver Waiting With Your Name

For those who would rather not gamble on a rank or decipher a timetable in a strange alphabet, a private transfer through Welcome Pickups or Kiwitaxi can be booked before you ever leave home. The driver carries you door to door to the hotels beneath the citadel for a fixed €45 to €60, settled in advance so nothing is left to chance. The journey runs about the same forty-five minutes as the taxi; you pay a little more for the certainty of a known face and a known price waiting at the kerb.

However you come — by rail with your ticket clutched close, by cab to the very threshold, or on the slow bus down the coast — the reward is the same and it does not disappoint. Set your bags down in Koukaki, step out into the evening, and let the floodlit Parthenon do what it has done to travellers for two and a half thousand years.
