Handle the connection well and you can be through arrivals and standing at your stand in the time it takes a colleague to queue for coffee.

The Sprinter that drops you at the door

For a delegate who values a clean, predictable run, the direct NS Sprinter is the obvious winner and I'd book my day around it. It leaves from Schiphol Airport station, one level below the arrivals plaza, and runs straight through to Amsterdam RAI station in around 10 minutes: no changes, no guesswork. RAI station is not a euphemism for "a bit of a walk away"; it sits next to the venue, so you step off the platform and the halls are in front of you. Several direct trains an hour means that if you just miss one, the next is minutes behind, which matters when your calendar is built in fifteen-minute blocks.

The fare is almost comically modest for a business trip: about €3.70 in second class. My one piece of organised-traveller advice is to sort your ticketing before you reach the platform. Be honest with yourself about why you'd choose this. It costs more and takes longer than the Sprinter, and it introduces a change at Zuid — a busy interchange that's easy enough but not what you want while wrangling a wheeled case and a garment bag. I'd keep it in my back pocket for the specific case where I'm staying near Europaplein and the metro stop is closer to my hotel door than RAI station is. Otherwise, the direct train wins on every count that a congress morning cares about.

• Pre-booked private transfer: operators such as Schiphol Travel Taxi and Welcome Pickups run a fixed-price, door-to-door service, typically €40–55. The draw here isn't speed — it's the same ~15 minutes, but certainty. The price is agreed in advance with nothing to negotiate at a tired moment, and it's a common choice for congress delegates who want the whole thing settled before they land. If you're claiming it back on expenses, the fixed receipt is tidy too.

An organiser's short brief

Put simply: unless a specific reason pushes you onto the road, take the direct Sprinter. It's the cheapest, the fastest, and the only option that literally deposits you beside the halls. Buy or tap your ticket before the platform to dodge the paper surcharge, aim for a train with a few minutes' buffer before your first session, and keep the metro as a hotel-specific alternative rather than a default. Save the taxi or a pre-booked transfer for the mornings when cargo, timing, or a client makes door-to-door worth the extra euros. Do that, and the journey from touchdown to trade-fair floor becomes the least eventful line in your itinerary — which, for a working congress day, is exactly what you want.
